Sorry to Burst Your Bubble

RayTim thought up a humorous idea about Mario abusing the bubbles in New Super Mario Bros. Wii that we quickly spun into this joke instead. Our turnaround time for getting this figured out was much smoother than normal. I’m not sure why that was… so I’ll just thank Tim.

    Job decribtion didn’t say everything.
By the way, in my memory, bubble bobbles aren’t fun after NES, am I correct?

    • MiMGodfather says:

I personally loved the “Bust-A-Move” arcade games that used the Bubble Bobble dragons… although that isn’t really in the same area/genre as the original Bubble Bobble I guess 🙂

  2. LiancoZ says:

Um time to grize from my rave. Yeah I wanted to listen to all the podcasts before I commented. Read all the comments. And I am making a lousy first impression huh? Anyway I just wanted to. And as for the comic. ? Keep up with the good work. XD

  3. Agent4286 says:

Ha! Still, there are much worse jobs. The gears in the background intrigue me, could all of Mario’s adventures be interactions with a pre-rendered rear projection and a conveyor belt? (Think Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams & Holiday videos if you don’t know what I mean)

    NCG,
    Harley

    • Keja says:

It reminded me of the gel-arshie section from The fifth chapter of Strong Bad’s cool game for attractive people, but I don’t suppose many people have played it.

Any way, Excellent Comic Guys! It made me chuckle.

  4. FluffyPanda says:

Wanted: Cute dinosaur for major role in new Mario game.

Must be prepared to eat a daily meal of beans, cabbage and washing up liquid as part of duties.

Please send photo with application, black and white permitted as skin colour will not be a barrier to entry.

  5. The Gastronomic Gamer says:

I like the idea, but I don’t like the execution.

I think that it would be a more powerful comic if it was all silent (textless) and showed the Bubble Bobble people looking for work in the job listings, going in for the interview, talking and laughing with Miyamoto in a hallway, then finally the comic that you drew, one making Luigi into a bubble, the other one simply looking pissed off.

    • Talduras says:

I’ll admit, I agree the execution could have used some work. However, on the plus side, these one-panel comics do save Ray from hand cramps.

    • FluffyPanda says:

You want Ray to omit a speech bubble and replace it with 6 frames of complex artwork? Demanding much?

  6. roadjcat says:

Having not played NSMBW or Bubble Bobble, it’s not that humorous to me. I don’t know if it’s because I had to kinda think about it first because I hadn’t played the games, or like The Gastronomic Gamer said, it just wasn’t executed well.

    • cramill says:

I dissagree. I don’t think you had to play the games to get the joke, only recognize the characters. The joke isn’t about the games, it’s about job descriptions. Since I have been looking for and applying for jobs recently, I find this hilarious!

  7. Gregjr94 says:

That’s almost similar to being promised product placement in a Guitar Hero game and finding out it’s only visible in one venue and you need a magnifying glass.

  8. BadnikHunter says:

Haha, NCG guys. This could kinda be a part 2 to the Hit and Miss comic.

    • Talduras says:

Wouldn’t work. Bub and Bob (yes, those really are their names) have had a number of remakes over the years, two of them on the DS and one on WiiWare (that one was more of a re-tooling, really). Granted, almost all of the new games have been panned by critics, while the original still praised (which usually ends up packed with the remakes), so it’s practically gone the way of Sonic.

  9. Zacko says:

NCG Guys. I love it when the comic portrays characters behind the scenes of the game (much like Absence Makes the Wait Feel Longer). Imagine the production of Spirit Tracks, and in order things to work right (much like movie production) Zelda has to DIE so they can do it right. That…doesn’t really make sense now that I think about it, but it does remind me that my friends and I thought actors really sacrificed their lives to make movies where they die when we were little. We eventually figured it out when we saw the same actor in another movie after that…a great relief. Anyways, again, NCG.

  10. freeplay says:

This may be the first 2pstart comic that i didn’t find funny in the least.

    • D3vin says:

      Ur doing it wrong,
      you are supposed to say
“This comic USED to be good”
      😉

      • freeplay says:

No, I’m sure it’s going to be get again next week, i just didn’t get the joke this week.

      • D3vin 2.0 says:

        The joke is this:
In the job description it said that they “Will have a major role in a Mario game” The Bubble Bobble characters mistook it as they were going to be in the game itself, not working behind the scenes, blowing the bubbles that the players ride in.
See? The joke comes from the disappointed Bubble Bobble characters’ frustration.

  11. Snifit says:

A cute comic. I agree, I like seeing “behind the scenes” comics. I also think this goes well with the idea that Mario 3 is actually just a play, Mario runs off stage at the end of each level, gears support platforms, the curtain rises and falls, etc.
I always wondered how those platforms rotated.
Always nice to see these single panel jokes.

  12. Talduras says:

    Clever.

Though I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but this doesn’t explain how they can bubble on-screen. =P

  13. D3vin says:

Nice, although you now have the Bubble Bobble theme stuck in my head.
    Ncg

  14. Using the newly-instituted score of “Success v. Fail” I rate this a success because it got me to chuckle.

    • Talduras says:

That same method of scoring didn’t work for me on this one. I didn’t laugh, though I still appreciated the comic. It made me laugh on the inside.

Since you bring that scoring system up, I’d say the last comic that was a “fail” (ignoring any Tim’s Takes) was probably “A Big Help.” I get it, but it just doesn’t make me or my inner child smile.

Wow… I just realized the success/failure system make giving feedback a LOT easier. I may have to do that from now on.

Anyway, I too give this comic my stamp of success.

    • TheNinjaMouse says:

Agreed. My stamp of success goes here:

      SUCCESS!

  15. Highwater Trousers says:

Fun little one panel-comic. Nice art, easy to understand joke, I give it a thumbs up!

Although, I feel a bit misled by the comics title. With the title “Sorry to Burst Your Bubble” I would have expected some sort of bursting of a physical bubble. However, the only bubble that was burst was only metaphorical and representative of a dream or idea. In addition, the art on the main page of the website clearly shows a physical bubble. Therefore, the audience would be expecting an actual bubble being burst and not someone’s dreams. Alas, I am greatly disappointed and must turn my thumbs up, into a thumbs down…

No, just kidding, just kidding! I liked the comic and the title is fine! I just like having some fun with sayings like these.

  16. Laelaps says:

Hey guys! Just wanted to say that I’m RISING FROM MY GRAVE. I’ve been reading your comic since last summer with the Let’s Tap “How Original” comic. I love your comic because you guys are consistently funny, have great artwork, and always pac in nice little hidden jokes. My favorite comic is Echochrome Auditions, which I printed out and slipped into the plastic cover on the back of my physics binder last fall. You guys are awesome, and keep up the good work!

  17. randomperson says:

honestly id say i dont like it as much as last week sorry

  18. Supersonic24 says:

Meh. I don’t get it. Therefore it sucks. Just kidding guys! I don’t know who those characters are at all, so I don’t have a clue what this means though….

    • D3vin 2.0 says:

Wikipedia to the rescue, i guess.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_Bobble
They come from an old(ish) arcade game were you played as a dinosaur/dragon that defeated enemies by encasing them in bubbles and popping them. The joke focuses on their ability to blow bubbles and NSMBwii’s “player in a bubble” mechanic.

    THIS IS GENNUINELY AWESOME!

    I don’t get it!

  24. gatorsteph202 says:

I think its time that I RISE FROM MY GRAVE!! Ive been reading 2pstart comics said I heard abou them on my fav nintendo site. My favorite comic would be be the penguin suit mario(poor baby penguins lol). this weeks comic was hilarious since when playing super mario bros wii, i always abuse the bubbble funcion to get throuh a level faster. Its funny thatt bubble bobble makes the bubbles cuz youd never think that mario had that ability himself. Keep up the good work, you guys are great!!

  25. mocliamtoh says:

While I can’t honestly say I liked the execution, I did enjoy the joke.

Also, I have a musical misfits suggestion
    Killer 7 – Rave On

    • randomperson says:

killer 7 rave on was already selected now to use the comics name sorry to burst your bubble

and if you want proof then scroll down until you see killer 7 rave on

      • mocliamtoh says:

Oh well…I really should look through the whole archive sometime.

Also, I see what you did there.

  26. The22ndquincy says:

Hey guys, rising from my grave here. It feels good to rise from my grave. I’d rather rise from my grave than not rise from my grave. If you know what I mean. I should’ve risen from my grave earlier, but I am rising from my grave right now. Well, that was my comment just to say I was rising from my grave.

    • Dry Bones says:

This is a blatant attempt to break the “Most Use of the ‘Rise From Your Grave’ Soundbite in One Grave-Rising” record! Let’s see if it works… Good luck, 22nd!

      • Talduras says:

I kinda hope they read it fast so we have a constant stream of “Wise fwom your gwave” soundbites. =D

  27. Dry Bones says:

I’m not sure where all this “poor execution” stuff is coming from. What is wrong with you quote, unquote “PEOPLE???” (Kidding! While I don’t agree with that sentiment, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.)

I thought this was funny and very well done. I really liked the annoyed expression on the blue dino’s face. This was an interesting look at what goes on behind-the-scenes. Nice work!

    • D3vin 7 (better than Vista) says:

I know what you mean. This is a good comic, just not the ones were people fall out of their chairs laughing or get sick because they laugh too much. It still deserves a NCG, and I think is a “Success” nonetheless.

I wonder how the behind the scenes for “Pixel Vision” looks like?

  28. Cheeseball701 says:

You would think they would catch on after getting the short shrift in Yoshi’s Island, which they heard stars a super dragon, of sorts. (A common misconception).

Good joke guys, although I would like to see more artwork pumped out of Ray. Which is difficult, given this comic is suited to the 1-panel gag. Alas, it seems all too evident that Ray’s girlfriend is getting in the way of me having my 23-panel masterpieces with optimus prime and masterchief in it. Face it, Ray, your new girlfriend is a Yoko Ono, or at least an Amy Rose. Go ahead, see if we care! Leave for twinkle park without us, your loyal fanbase! But I’ll have you know exactly what we’ll do if you continue to draw merely a paltry panel: we’ll continue to read whatever you decide to put up that week… because what you offer is free, and is it really all that difficult to take time out of one’s day to read a comic? I’m writing this aren’t I?

In all seriousness, for one “paltry panel,” it was fairly intricate. I don’t have an addiction to silly vector art. I swear.

I need to go to sleep.
