Tortoises and Hares

TimHuge thanks to Matt from Brawl in the Family for this week’s guest strip as well as his guest appearance on the podcast this week. It’s always nice to get to know other webcomic creators, but it’s especially nice to find one as friendly and talented as Matt. We’ll definitely have to get him back on the podcast again, and if you’re all nice enough in the comments, he might even do another guest strip some day! Anyway, I’m a big fan of this strip for its wonderful expressions and relevance to past podcast episodes. I also attribute Tim’s apparent chubbiness in the first panel to ‘creative license’ rather than ‘rapid weight gain’, although if I keep having so much with my new PS3, it just might come true!

RayThat was great, Matt – I’m impressed with how well you successfully merged both sites into this strip – though I can’t say I would ever expect anything less from you. Well done.

    NC… oh wait. NC, BitF.

  2. TriforceBun says:

Well, what can I say? (Certainly not “FIRST!”) I had a lot of fun doing this strip, although it was a bit nerve-racking…I didn’t want to tarnish the 2P START! archives! But yeah, this whole thing was a fun experience for sure, and I’d like to thank Tim and Ray for giving me the chance to come on and talk and draw a bit. Keep up the good work, guys!

And now I just hope enough people out there are familiar enough with nautiluses…

    • Mr. Beatdown says:

That doesn’t even look like a piece of exercise equipment.

    • Tim says:

Hopefully the comments here don’t traumatize you too much, even though they will forever be attached to this comic and the artwork’s original intent will forever be tarnished by the passing thoughts of some jerks and 12-year olds who don’t know what a nautilus is. No pressure or anything. Sleep tight!

      • Talduras says:

That would probably be preferred compared to me posting another comment that’s more than 2 pages, kind of like what I unloaded on the podcast page two days ago. O_o

      • Keja says:

I don’t think it’s just twelve year olds who don’t know what a nautilus is, but that looks nothing like a submarine!

seriously though, it’s a sea dwelling creature that looks similar to an amonite.

      • yeah568 says:

*ahem* The (only?) twelve-year old will now leave, due to your offensive comment.

        (5 minutes later)

So, Tim hasn’t made any new posts. Huh. And thanks Wikipedia, for telling me what a nau… I mean… uh… screw it.

And Tim looks like Wario. Matthew, learn how to draw more faces. (I’m kidding. Of course I am! I mean, I like Brawl in the Fam… Wait, if I say I like BitF more, Ray and Tim will hate me, and if I say I like 2P START! more, Matthew will hate me. What to do, what to do….)

But in all seriousness, this is awesome that my two most favoritest webcomics are combined together. And the fact that this comment is getting long. And off-topic. I mean, I was supposed to be leaving, but now I’m here posting this long comment, and now I’m looking for filler to make it even longer.

        NCG/BitF!

    • Talduras says:

Yeah, I know what you’re talking about. Nautilus. It’s one of those creatures I came across in Meridia on planet Zebes.

      …………………………What?

    • TheLupineOne says:

Sorry, Mr. BitF. This is revenge for stealing my Musical Misfit thunder! My choice of Sky Tower from PokΓ©mon Mystery Dungeon Red & Blue was pretty much a lock!

  3. Talduras says:

Nice guest comic, Matthew Tarantino… er, Taranto. Captures the 2PStart flow, a little bit of their humor, and brings in some BitF humor for the final punch. Who knew a knuckle sandwich was so tasty? ^_^

By the way, call me crazy, but after the 2nd Rabbid is revealed Tim looks a lot like Richard Nixon, and after the third Rabbid was revealed Tim looks a lot like Domo.

Oh, and noticed a bunch of the hidden details. The second TV shot makes it look like Tim and Ray are watching turtles in a glass cage, or on a nature documentary. Third TV shot, totally dig the Mario reference. And I see Kirby!

  4. D3vin says:

Lol, It is not a “kirby eating stuff” comic, but a good comic anyways. Tim’s expressions are halarious, you sure got a knack for wacky cartoon faces, Maximum Tomato, Matthew Taranto. Nice Comic Guy!

For those who don’t know, a nautilus is kinda like an Octopus or a Squid, but with an outer shell like a snail.

  5. Supersonic24 says:

Wow, I didn’t expect the comic to be this funny! I have to admit, I do prefer Ray’s artwork, Matt’s is great, but Ray’s art can be amazing. If there was some super secret announcement of you going 3PSTART! I wouldn’t be disappointed in the least, even though I doubt it will ever happen. Nice comic guy, certainly one for the archives with it’s distinct art and humor. Don’t worry, your last panel was perfect!

  6. rashrules says:

Haha, BitF is what referred me to 2P start, and for the past 2 days I’ve been reading all the archives.

Guess you have someone to thank for another fan, Tim & Ray. πŸ™‚

    • Talduras says:

We pretty much have a similar scenario with me, except I being a 2PStart fan learning of BitF. Only started delving into the archives today, between spurts of homework, now as far back as #80, and it’s blasted 5:50AM! Why have I not pulled myself to sleep by now?!

  7. The Gastronomic Gamer says:

Great comic. I really enjoyed it. The only complaints are Tim’s odd expression at the end and the fact that it was a little predictable. However, those can easily be overlooked. Hope you do another guest comic some day!

  8. Talduras says:

By the way, call me insane, but perhaps one of these days Ray and Matt should do a collaboration comic! Yeah, we may have to warp the space-time continuum a bit, and this may result in the Applecalypse, but it’d all be worth it to answer one question…

What happens when Kirby eats Ray?

(We already know what would happen if he ate Tim. He’d summon a pool full of money!).

    • BadnikHunter says:

He gets Ray’s ski slope and destroys people with awesome techno music

      • talduras says:

Ski slope?? Cool! We need two Kirbies then, so we can have one summon a money pool with Tim’s powers, and the other summon a ski slope with Rays powers. Then we can all ski into a pool full of money!

        ……………What?

  9. randomperson says:

HEY Tim you have to put the comic in the archives

  10. randomperson says:

TIM DID YOU FIRE RAY HIS TWITTER ISNT THERE

Though seriously, nice comic BitF, hope the other comments aren’t too traumatizing. Also, I blame the resident Panda for the 1337 speak πŸ™‚

  12. Keja says:

This reminds me of the Tim/Wario fan art someone did, I forget who (sorry!).

I also hear that in the game April is the newer series version, but I don’t know because I won’t buy the game.

  13. TheLupineOne says:

FIRST! to notice the Taranto drawing of Kirby on the topright of Panel 1

    • TheLupineOne says:

And is that Rayman on the Character Select Screen?

    • Talduras says:

Way too late. I refer you to my first individual comment for this comic, in which my last sentence reads, “I see Kirby” (in reference to spotting hidden comic stuffs).

  14. Dominator_101 says:

Awesome guest strip, Matt. I loved some of the details you put in, like the stuff on the TV. And of course you couldn’t do a guest strip without Kirby in it at all.

But seriously, good job. Definitely up to par with what I expect from both comics. Hope to see more in the future!

And Does Ray really hold the nunchuck in his right hand? Just wondering…

    • TriforceBun says:

      Um…..
      …oops.

In other news, front page comments are actually kinda neat in their own way! Thanks for the feedback, guys.

      • Dominator_101 says:

Maybe no one noticed… If you quick flip the panel, then re-flip the words, it’ll be good as new.

And maybe you should add front page comments to BitF.

  15. roadjcat says:

It’s good. I like it. πŸ˜€ I don’t know anything really about TMNT, but the randomness of the third rabid was enough for me.

  16. Snifit says:

Ha ha, great comic. The faces are so unlike anything on 2pStart they just MAKE the comic.
Not a bad punchline either. And I especially like the Kirby painting in the first panel. Even though its a guest strip there’s still some 2pStart hidden goodness.
Great comic Matt, but now I can’t wait to see what amazing thing you do for your NEXT guest strip!

  17. TheNinjaMouse says:

The joke was a little too familiar, but the visuals really sell it and the crazy Rabbid at the end was hilarious. Nice job, Matt! I always enjoy seeing your work.

  18. BadnikHunter says:

Haha, nice comic, BitF. It made me laugh. Out loud. In class. Made for some wired looks, but stilll an awesome comic

  19. At first I thought it was a predictable joke, but the reveal of the Rocksteady silhouette as a Nautilus-wearing Rabbid was unexpected and hilarious. NGC (Nice Guest Comic)

  20. Exploding Pancakes says:

Time to rise from my grave. I have some stuff I’ve been thinking about, and I thought about rising from my grave on the latest podcasts page, but decided to wait until now.

First off, the usual drill about how I found the site and etc. I was reading another webcomic called Nerf Now when I saw your ad in the sidebar. Then I noticed that the ad had a Mr. Saturn in it. Being a huge EarthBound fan, I clicked it and began reading from the beginning. While the comics were great I couldn’t find any EB references anywhere, Until I saw that Koopa and Goomba comic, where Mr. Saturn was sitting on a chair in that circle. I was like “oh man, this must be when they first discovered EB. The comics after this one must have loads of EB stuff!” But I couldn’t find a single EB-related comic or cameo after that. False advertising!

The last podcast was great, and I like BiTF a lot too, so it was interesting to hear what Matt had to say. Also, the Mother3 song was great.

Though one thing I can’t get off my mind is the bashing Ray gave to NSMBWii in the podcast three(two?) weeks ago. While it’s true that the level is short, the Boss battle is long and pretty damn hard, so you could count the boss battle as the second part of the stage.
The last stage still kind of left me dissapointed, because it didn’t feel very epic. In Mario 1 (which also happens to be the only other Mario 2D game I own) they just threw everything they had at you in the final level: Water, Those fishes, Hard enemy formations and a pipe puzzle. In NSMBWii it just felt like the other castles.

Anyway, Nice job, hope you keep doing the comic and podcast and don’t drown.

  21. Lottel says:

Well guys, I’ve got to hand it to you.
Ray? This is the best work you’ve ever done. πŸ˜‰

  22. TomX says:

Honestly, the content seemed a bit dated at this point, but that’s not to say I didn’t love the comic. (And yes, I listened to the podcast, the games just been out for a while now.)

Anyway, it was a wonderful blend of BitF humor and 2P Start style humor such that it could easily belong in either comic’s archive. So when does BitF get a guest strip from Ray and Tim? πŸ˜›

  23. LiancoZ says:

Um time to grize from my rave. (again seeing as people forgot Yeah I wanted to listen to all the podcasts before I commented. Read all the commics. And I am making a lousy first impression huh? Anyway I just wanted to. Keep up with the good work.

But I liked the comic I thought I knew what would happen because of what I have heard about the rabbids in the new game etc but it was still good to laugh at.

  24. Apkinesis says:

Easily the best guest comic ever! A very nice blend of 2P Start and Brawl in the Family; especially loved everything about the last two panels. Though I’ve only been reading BitF comics for a little while now (since #199 plus some Waluigi comics a friend showed me before that), I very much enjoy them, so this week’s special 2P Start comic and Podcast were a fun treat.

  25. mkava says:

    Nice comic, Matt!
My two favorite webcomics… 2P START! and BitF coming together. Oh how nice. =D

  26. Gamer Blue says:

    Expecting a comment on today’s 2pstart/Bitf?
    TOO BAD.
    WALUIGI TIME.

  27. Dry Bones says:

What a tragic waste of Dr. Pepper! Nice Guest Strip.

I just wanted to thank Ray, Tim and Matt for proving that webcomics don’t have to be dirty or vulgar to be funny. I wish others would follow your lead.

    • Dominator_101 says:

Amen to that. That’s part of the reason that I love these comics. It’s nice to know that some people still be funny without lacing their jokes with cursing.

  28. Teengamer says:

I’m not sure if it counts, but I think I’ll rise from my grave!

I was introduced to this website through Brawl in the Family, so you have Matt to thank! You guys do amazing strips, and I was happy to see Matt’s guest strip.

Your podcasts are awesome too, and definitely entertaining. I was a bit concerned to see that you guys didn’t mention Spirit Tracks, and in your last two podcasts you put it down! It is my favorite DS game, and I didn’t even get to hear any of its GOOD qualities. I guess this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but still.

Perhaps you guys aren’t fans of Zelda (I saw the Zelda Wii comic. Hilarious! ;-] ) but I appreciate you giving your attention to it.

    -TG-

  29. D3vin says:

Just look at all these new faces here thanks to BitF, you guys need to do guest comics from other well-known comics to up the readers! πŸ˜€

  30. Zacko says:

This comic was great! I love the amalgamation of BitF and 2P Start styles here. I especially love the little funny deatils included: the Kirby on the back wall, the screenshots of the game (including a Mario-esque shot of Splinter kicking a turtle shell), and the Dr. Pepper exploding in fury.

  31. Ah, TMNT Smash-Up… so much potential squandered.

Great guest comic Matt; been reading BitF since the How the King Stole Christmas arc and I always look forward to updates there!

  32. Highwater Trousers says:

That was just hilarious! Just simply awesome! Notice, though, that having a rabbid with a giant nautilus on its head is random, but funny as well. That, my friends, is good clean humor.

Out of curiosity, in Tim’s statement “…although if I don’t stop having so much with my new PS3, it just might come true!” did he mean to say “having so much fun with my new PS3?” Now, I’m not nitpicking, but my inner English student just wants to know… THWACK! *gets hit with a 2 X 4*

    • Tim says:

what are you talking about? It doesn’t say that at all. And don’t say I went in and changed it, because that would just be wrong.

  33. C.Olimar788 says:

Rayman’s cameo in the character select is absolutely priceless. XD As is the rest of the comic, of course, but that’s an epic little easter egg.

    OW it’s funny because it’s truuuuuue… T.T

  34. Dark_Devin says:

πŸ™ I read Brawl in the family to read Brawl in the family, I don’t like my 2pStart mixed with my BitF. Get your turkey outta my peanut butter BitF.

    • Light_D3vin says:

What’s so different about this one? Other than the art style, I can see this done as an actual 2p Start comic. Besides, It was nice of Matt to do Ray and Tim a favor and give them a break and made a comic for them. Besides, Turkey and Peanut Butter is tasty~

      • Dark_Devin says:

I don’t like BitF style or jokes sometimes, I find them a bit lacking where as 2pstart is simply dead on almost every time.

      • CKcheeseboy says:

I have to disagree a little bit. I feel that overall, BitF has a better hit:miss ratio than 2P Start, but 2P Start’s hits are usually better than BitF’s hits (excluding ones like Ode to Minions and How the King Stole Christmas because they aren’t the norm). Part of that is due to the nature of the comics themselves: BitF updates more than once a week, but as a result the comics tend to be smaller, whereas 2P Start’s once a week updates lean it more towards longer, more developed jokes. So with BitF, I’ll usually at least smile at a comic, with 2P Start I find that it’s more of a “awesome vs. meh” kind of thing. Maybe that’s just me, though.

Also, as Devin said, this comic feels more like a 2P Start comic than a BitF comic, because it’s a more developed joke.

  35. blaster says:

    Something funny happened earlier today.
I listen to podcasts on my MP3 and put it on shuffle.
I had about 13 episodes in it. One of them is No. 092. Your first Farewell.
You guy talked about this joke there.

  36. Twillightlucario says:

*falls into grave* …I think I did that wrong…

Anywho, I’m going to rise from the grave to tell ya’ll about my love for the comic. I found this the other day when checking out Brawl in the Family so I thought I’d check it out…by reading all of the comics in one sitting! Now I’m listening to your Podcasts as I type this.

“Define ‘ Adiction’ ” Is my favourite comic because it strikes a little close to home, having clocked in 40 or more hours of Super Smash Brothers Brawl in my first week with the game.

I also have to give you props for “Paradise Lost” mostly because I actually have a collection of Lost Miis.

Can’t wait next for the next comic! *climbs back into th grave*

  37. ShadScy says:

Nice! I love BitF and 2PS, so having them combined into one is extra-awesome (if the Smash Up theme is a tad late). Now for Tim and Ray to do Matt a favour in the same way?

  38. Leirin says:

This was a powerfully awesome guest comic, the expressions had me howling with laughter.

  39. koollizard says:

hello all you out there in 2pstart land
i have been visiting your site for the last three days and i thought i should rise from my grave!?!?! i found this site because of the link on brawl in the family i have been folowing bitf since comic 10 and figured if you guys were inteviewing matt you must have good taste and i was right your comics are awesome keep up the good work yeeeeahhhhhh

  40. sVybDy says:

I can only imagine that TMNT Smash-Up is the video game industry’s practical joke on all of us. They couldn’t have possibly thought that the roster they assembled was any good, right?

I’m just glad I looked at the roster first and then didn’t buy a copy.

  41. Dr. Disaster says:

The last panel is what makes it for me. That face is priceless.

  42. Gadoink says:

    NCBitF!

  43. John says:

This is just a FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU rage comic.

  44. freeplay says:

Looks like Matt is going to get 2nd and 3rd in the Joystick Weekly Web comic Wrap up. NCM, both of them.

  45. KnucklesE says:

Awesome Guest Comic! I love Brawl in the Family and I recently found this comic and read them all in day. (Good stuff). A perfect fusion I must say…

  46. shadowsss says:

I see a merge of BiTF (of course, the artist), 2PS (the characters), and Bunnywith (from Snafu). Was the last one intentional?

  47. Mirby says:

I love me some Brawl in the Family, so this guest strip is great. Plus, I think Tim’s power levels went over 9000 when his anger spiked.

  48. Frozen says:

Oh that Matthew Tarranto. Such a cheeky little fellow he is. Always going about and livening up his little corner of the internet, spreading his loving joy across the 2P START! and the Brawl in the Family. Etcetera and etcetera, hmmm hmmm. Thanks to him I discovered the dashing young men of 2P START!. I find it fitting that I must now rise from my grave where it all began and just hope that the next podcast they decide to mention me and my balding head. If only I had the same hair as that lovely little Ray, I keep on searching for product that might reduce the reduction of my hairline. Oh ho ho ho, and I wish I had the beanie that makes Time so adorable.

  49. Darkton says:

Oh, woe is you! How terrible it is that a character you don’t like is in the game, even though you don’t have to play as him! Truly the universe is ruined!

    Get a life, fanboy.
