Are Guitar Hero Guitars Overpriced?

RayFor Wii owners, Guitar Hero III with the guitar included is $89.99. When you do the math, it seems like a fair price. $50 game plus a $40 guitar peripheral.

For the last four months, Wii owners have been unable to buy a guitar separately, but sometime later this March they will begin to go on sale for $69.99.

What?! That’s ridiculous! Just to make it worse, the product page also lists the guitar as having features including “2.4GHz wireless technology with a 30-foot range” and “Auto sleep mode saves battery power.” I hate to be picky, but those features are in the Wii Remote. Have they forgotten their guitar has no wireless technology without your Wii-Remote plugged in?

I feel like I have read this before…

I agree that they are overpriced. Since you can already play with just the remote, it seems like you could rig up a guitar controller that had no electronic components and sold for $15.

  2. Taedirk says:

Don’t forget that they didn’t have to incorporate any of the electronics of an actual controller in there, just an adapter to the Wiimote. Good thing they were able to cut the costs AND raise the price at the same time. I’ll be over here waiting patiently to see if Rock Band ever shows up on Wii because I don’t want to give those bastards another cent.

It makes me wanna puke! I’m kinda of glad now that I didn’t get Guitar Hero, but it sucks for you and and a couple of my friends who bought it. Sorry man. It’s a real bummer, and an annoying one at that.

So… the IGN Brawl review is in, (I didn’t read it) and guess who reviewed it. You guessed it, the one person who shouldn’t have. Matt Casamassina. Lame! Ray, you gotta go at LEAST one point higher than his 9.5, just to spite him… ha, nah whatever.

Really though… how can you properly review a game you don’t know how to play?? It’s just basic speculation, and nothing more. He probably just counted up all the features and branded it a 9.5. Sorry that I’m bringing up this topic, but… that’s the way it goes.

I look forward to your review Ray.

I’d be happy to pay that price for a wii guitar… Here in Brazil one of those is costing something around 230 dollars (no game!), it’s just wrong…

I remember when I bought Guitar Hero I for PS2 for $69.99. Glad I sailed my ship by this generation of guitar games.

  6. Gewurztraminer says:

If I had known this I would have bought TWO copies for $70 when Toys ‘R’ Us had their sale. Must… get… 2nd… guitar… oooh, Brawl!

(guess what Activision… TS. my attention is elsewhere now…. sort of)

  7. Kip says:

Absolutely overpriced. EA has said Rock Band will be coming to Wii though they haven’t announced a release date or anything. I’m waiting to see if their guitar will be compatible. Although, given Red Octane’s bitchiness, it’s quite possible that they won’t be compatible.

In other news, did you send in your Wii GH3 disc to get a stereo replacement disc? I did, it only took two weeks and didn’t cost me anything (they send you a self-addressed stamped CD sleeve). If you can go without the game for two weeks it’s well worth it, the difference between stereo and mono is immediately apparent the first time you play a song.

  8. dj75728 says:

that sucks. I picked up a spare xplorer guitar for 30 bucks when GH3 came out on 360. And I can’t wait for you review either ray

I will point out that Nyko is coming out with a cheaper guitar for the Wii on March 15th. It’s $50 and it’s called the FrontMan. I don’t know how great it will be, but at least it’s an alternative. I’d say, wait to see what kind of reviews it gets from Amazon customers before jumping on it, but it’s comforting to know that all the major parts of the guitar will just be built into the Wii Remote, so they can’t screw up TOO much.

  10. Daniel says:

Kip (or anyone else): Any idea if the replacement disc contains any of the DLC content that was made available for the other consoles but not Wii?

  11. Kip says:

No, the only thing the replacement disc gives is stereo sound. They don’t even add co-op quickplay, a feature which (I think) was quickly patched into the 360/ps3 versions.

They say that they are working with Nintendo to provide DLC, but I don’t see how they can do that if it wasn’t built into the game originally.

  12. Daniel says:

Ah, that’s unfortunate (but I guess — to bring this back on-topic — should be inferred, considering the price gouging for a second wiitar). Thanks for the info.
