Tim’s Take: A Promise Soon Broken

TimI never thought I’d have to do a comic again for this site, and I CERTAINLY didn’t think it would be a 15 panel comic (seriously, has RAY even done a 15-panel comic?). But it was a lot of fun once I figured out how to make a comic that wouldn’t require any actual drawing on my part, just some smooth Photoshop skills, recycled artwork, and a Tim’s Take intro (you all got Punk’d, didn’t you?). Anyway, if you haven’t seen the Project Needlemouse video yet, it is a little different than portrayed above. I was just reading between the lines a bit.

    I LOVE IT!
It was better than my use of recycled artwork I’ll post in a bit, but I gotta go to bed, Since waiting until 3:00 Am isn’t what I normally do on a regular basis.
    Cheers on a successful comic!

  2. Supersonic24 says:

Awesome! Wow, I thought it would be a lot worse.

  3. Supersonic24 says:

Sorry about the double post, but haven’t you seen the new picture of Needlemouse? It actually reveals a lot about the game.

Pretty good for a Tim’s Take.

Love the “If 2P START! Were Daily” reference at the end.

  5. blaster says:

What kind of trailor was that…

  6. The Gastronomic Gamer says:

I hated the punchline a lot until I realized that I’ve heard that before… I feel like I’ve been double-punk’d. Congratulations. You’ve definitely held your own without Ray and actually made me laugh more than usual. Maybe instead of 2p Start! dying, you could just use recycled artwork every week? There’s plenty of it and nobody’ll notice…

  7. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Alright Tim, you surprised me. When I saw the reused artwork from the original Tim’s Take, I wasn’t expecting much. However, the joke was actually pretty clever, and the artwork looked clean, even if it was recycled. Nice Comic Tim! πŸ™‚

  8. steve-ohs says:

Great Comic Tim! You don’t even need Ray anymore.
    Now about those new t-shirts…

  9. JD Fedule says:

In all honesty, the Project Needlemouse trailer has no effect on me at all. I mean, we’ve all been round the Sonic Cycle so many times that it’s practically a state of mind now, and the trailer gives nothing to go on but the same promises that have been made of new Sonic games since forever ago. On top of that, they recycle the speed line that is the calling card of people who completely missed the point of the games that Needlemouse is trying to evoke. It talks so much, and yet it tells us absolutely nothing. Be suspicious.

  10. Nebula427 says:

It’s funny because it’s true. Ray says “oh, brother” again. HAHA Love it.

  11. Kyzin says:

Nicely done Tim. And with Ray gone, you can have the money pool all to yourself…Or you can make him your butler in place of the artist.

  12. Tacos says:

I think I’m the only one who is actually getting hyped for the Sonic game. Maybe because the fact that its in 2D makes me hopeful that it will be on level with Sonic Rush, which is a very solid game. But thats just me

  13. BadnikHunter says:

Wow, who would have thought the 2nd Tim’s Take would be successfull? Pretty darn awesome comic guys (PDACG? Nah.)

  14. FluffyPanda says:

You’re lucky that I had my monitor in landscape mode today… if it were in the more usual portrait orientation the (first) joke would have been spoiled by all those lovely extra vertical pixels πŸ˜‰

Maybe you should get Ray to draw you some reusable generic panels so you can take the workload off his shoulders from time to time!

  15. Dominator_101 says:

Nice re-use of some “the winning formula” artwork.

Seriously, nice comic Tim. Maybe you should do. Comics more often.

  16. ultimateDK says:

This is the kind of awesome that deserves to be hanging on my fridge.

  17. jbruner says:

When I saw the Tim’s Take art, my first immediate thought was, “This comic USED to be good” πŸ™‚ Tying that in with the obligatory Sonic joke and the new catch phrase makes this a Good Comic. Good work guys.

  18. Doopliss says:

    *snicker* recycled art…

  19. marcod says:

BAH. This comic use- wait… it’s good!? :O

This comic USED to be bad…. πŸ˜›

  20. Narnian says:

I love it! Nice job guys.

So true… but here’s to hoping.

  21. Bobipine says:

All new… GIMMICK, happens too much sadly… unless… have they recycled their ideas already? that could be a new gimmick

comic get’s the job done, not a future classic in my book, but still good

  22. Matthew says:

“Why do I ever ask you anything?”

  23. yeah568 says:

What?!? Recycled artwork for a Tim’s Take?!? Oh wait, never mind.

I never knew Tim could use Illustrator! He emulated Ray’s artwork perfec-

Recycled artwork yet again. Meh, whatever. Still a funny comic. NCG!

  24. sapphire says:

Haha, love this comic! It’s just sad that it’s true though. I am just waiting for SEGA to announce the gimmick sooner or later…

BTW, I’m kinda a long time fan, and just now rising from my grave… *cue victory song* XP

  25. Damian says:

Awesome job, Tim. Definitely on par with the normal comics, and I didn’t even notice the recycled artwork till people pointed it out.

-quelches urge to scream WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS-

  26. SuperSonicGoku says:

BUILT. FROM THE GROUND. UP. http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Cz-backlash/bleh/msjhf.jpg IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE

  27. Apkinesis says:

No humans? Does that mean no Robotnik/Eggman? I guess that’s the new gimmick right there: an all-new villain with all-new minions, perhaps to even rival Black Doom himself :O

Anyway, nice job with the comic Tim; I was expecting the entire comic to be another… “graphically challenged” one, so the transition to Ray’s style later on was a pleasant surprise, like a punchline in itself for the first four panels. So, including the Sonic topic that follows it, this week’s comic was sort of like getting two in one! (Perhaps to make up for the absence of Podcast this week?)

  28. roadjcat says:

It didn’t say no Rouge! πŸ˜€

  29. Gadoink says:

This comic used to be new…

    • D3vin says:

Just like “New” Super Mario Bros. (Wii) is exactly new? That has a lot of recycled material and it did good…
      “New 2P START! WII!”

  30. tustin2121 says:

    Freaking. Awesome. πŸ˜€

Just like everyone else, I thought this would be a rehashing of a Tim’s Take (“Tim’s Take Take 2”?) and was surprised when the graphics switched! For a moment, I thought Ray had come back in time to save the comic, and then I realized afterwards that the art had been recycled! Brilliant, Tim! The double joke thing is really a winning formula! πŸ˜€

  31. TheNinjaMouse says:

I gotta admit, unlike most people here, my first impression was that this looks cobbled together. But when I looked back on the first Tim’s Take, I realized what a drastic improvement this one is. So nice work, Tim! Reusing artwork was a great idea, considering the circumstances. [I know, not the most lavish of compliments, but we can’t inflate your ego too much. πŸ˜‰ ]

  32. FireSpark says:

Holy Macaroni! I just stumbled across something the likes of which I have never seen (ans may never see at all if SEGA slaps them around)! What am I talking about? Well it appears that one of Sonic’s fans has decided to make a movie.

    An animated movie.

A feature length, production house quality, animated movie, starring the fastest thing on two feet! Don’t believe me? See for yourselves: Sonic Fan Movie

But what ever you do, no one tell Ray. Otherwise he’ll just drop everything and camp out in front of his computer, wearing his sonic hat, for the next year and half.

    Ah, crap.

  33. dj75728 says:

I guess the Tim’s take things was kinda funny. BTW, Worst trailer ever, even by teaser standards. It just wasn’t funny to me. I don’t see why everyone is like “This was awesome!!!” let me in on the joke, cause I sincerely wanna know if I’m just not getting it.

I think maybe the Tim’s take 2 would’ve been better without the Project Needlemouse part. I think the latter ruined the former.

    • blaster says:

The joke IS how that rrailor sucks.
Well, if they really release a trailor like that.
      Definitely a BDA.

      Nice comic guys.

  34. Rob McKeena says:

This is lacking its new comic shine, but a great comic none the less.

  35. Dominator_101 says:

I just randomly noticed this, but I like how the wire coming out of the back of Ray’s Mac goes from going down in panel 5 to up in panel 6. But I guess that happens when you take panels from both “The winning formula” and “Evolving Zombies” and put them in the same comic.

How exactly does the power chord even go up like that? Is the plug on the ceiling?

    • Apkinesis says:

It’s off-screen so we don’t see it, but Tim probably just duct taped the cord to the handle of a vacuum cleaner πŸ˜› Maybe the power cord doubles as an antenna, which gives the computer better wireless reception when propped up so that the Sonic trailer could stream better.

  36. elah says:

HEY!! DON’T YOU DARE SHATTER MY HOPE UNTIL SEGA DOES!!!!!!!!!!!

    • D3vin says:

My hope has been shattered before Sega Made ‘Unleashed’, He’s dead. Let’s move on to the next best thing…
      Tim Land anyone?
      πŸ˜‰
All jokes aside, I have low expectations for this game. Let’s hope it works…

  37. Adrian Kent says:

Hey Tim and Ray. This is my first time posting. I’ve been a reader and podcast listener, ever since Owen Good started linking comics on Kotaku. (Which is about 4 weeks?) I really enjoy 2p Start because it’s clean jokes, and it doesn’t rely on cheap laughs to get by. Anyways, I wanted to say that this comic (#136) suffers from pacing issues. The first 3 panels disjointed look had me confused. Then when I reached the end, the joke flew by me, because I was still stumbling around wondering where my footing was.

Do you, Tim, allow Ray absolute creative freedom when he draws the comic? I hope Tim makes more comics in the future and gains some more knowledge on the art side of comic creation.

  38. Acgamer says:

Heh, nice comic! Let’s just hope it’s not accurate.

  39. TheLupineOne says:

    The first revelation! http://tiny.cc/nm

  40. Mirby says:

And now we know that Project Needlemouse is Sonic 4, and you’ve already done a comic on that. YAY!
