Tryouts

TimI hope you forgive the late comic, a few hours late should be justified for what we think is our best comic yet. I hope you agree! This was a couple weeks in the planning, but as you can see, it’s pretty long and took Ray quite awhile to draw. He wanted to make sure he got it right (especially Sonic, his favorite). In case any of you whippersnappers out there don’t know (I’m looking at you Ray!), that orange furry guy without arms is Q*bert. If you haven’t played Q*bert, get yourself an Atari or a MAME emulator and play it, it’s a classic!

TimIt was my pure love for Smash Brothers and its characters that kept me going during the creation of this one. Tim had made a general joke and we just kept taking it further and further until we knew there was no turning back – it all had to be turned into one long comic. I think it turned out well and I absolutely can not wait for Smash Bros. Brawl. Probably my most anticipated title of all time. I certainly hope Sonic made it through the actual registration process, though. I have little doubt he didn’t.

“Huh, piece of cake,” he’d probably say.

    Great stuff guys.
I actually didn’t see the ending coming at all.

  2. Roknine says:

    Awesome.

  3. Chris B says:

Love it! Great comic guys. Its always difficult to pull off “in” jokes but this does it off nicely!

  4. Andrew C says:

    Hmm…
    Mega man…
I never thought of him as a brawl character, but now that I think about it, he’d fit right in.
Sonic turned out really well, but the smash logo is rotated 180 (lol sorry an addict and a nitpicker here :P)

Just throwing this out: imagine if it were possible to copy your game logs from melee to brawl 🙂 My 4+ days logged could never be forgotten!

  5. Tim says:

Good catch Andrew! I didn’t notice that (and Ray didn’t either), but let’s pretend it was a little Easter Egg, and you found it! Thanks for checking us out!

  6. Scipo says:

Oh my gosh, you guys are awesome! Ha ha, freaking Qbert. I have anger issues when I play that game because I can never figure out which way to jump and I always end up jumping off the effing edge. SOOOOOO frustrating!

Great comic, though. I’ve been reading from the beginning, and even though the comic hasn’t been around very long, you guys are consistantly producing great work. Keep up the greatness!

  7. Hanibal says:

Other than the best last-panel gag I’ve in the last 6 months, the fact that Sakurai is holding his tryouts at the top of the q-bert pyramid made this absolutely brilliant.

  8. nancy says:

  13. AHAHAHAH this was great, AND I nocticed the boxes at the start ahhh good ole snake hiding the whole time lol

  14. Tim says:

Good catch Trickityhouses, I didn’t know how many people would notice that!

  15. Kadamon says:

I like the exclamation at the end the best. lol

  16. eee says:

    !

    Great stuff

  17. Lava says:

Ha, that’s really well done! Sonic and Megaman, well… everyone looks great, and it’s pretty funny too. Nice!

Someone really needs to send that to Sakurai (or NOA) as a token of appreciation from his American fans. (If you’re not actually American, my bad! Just insert “Western fans.” Heh.)

  18. Vadoff says:

Ooh I just discovered your comics and gave them all a good read.
Great stuff, this one’s definitely my favorite.

  19. Iliad says:

He wont fit in at all, that was the point of the comic.. putting snake in the new smash was asinine.

  20. raysono says:

no offense but that comic was pretty insulting. i mean sonic and megaman fits perfect for super smash bros brawl. =( -.-

  21. Phantasmagorical says:

Hahaha! But now Sonic is in Brawl! j00 guys phail!

  22. anonymous says:

Finally a webcomic that doesn’t suck.
    nice work.

If you need inspiration go to pennyarcade or CAD and then DO NOT do anything similar. Because they are both sh*t.

    Seriously….

    You are 100x better.

  23. CodeName555 says:

    lol, flippin hilarious.

  24. Paul says:

I got to say after the next person is hired line i saw it coming but it was a great setup.

  25. The Sean says:

LMAO at this.. Megaman especially. I’m readin all of these starting from 1

  26. MRL says:

Heh…I think Sonic threw EVERYONE for a loop. No-one really expected him to make the cut.

  27. Max says:

Ah, come on. Tommy Vercetti didn’t make the cut? I’m new to this comic, but I like so far. As always, I have to read through all the archives.

  28. Jumbif says:

There’s an online game (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/333995), or rather, strange emulator, made around the time of Melee (I think) which had Mega Man in the playable characters. He’s… okay. If he’s in the next Smash Bros. game, he better be… well… better. Just saying. Also, nice Sakurai.

  29. Mirby says:

The irony is that Sonic did, in fact, make it in.

  30. Johnny says:

And a little under 7 years later, Megaman makes it in to Smash Bros on Wii U and 3DS.

    • Tim says:

I’m just glad Qbert’s tryout landed him a role in Wreck-It Ralph. That little guy has talent as we see here in this comic as well as his starring role opposite Birdo.
