TimFirst of all, this comic was entirely Ray’s idea. Yes, Captain Rainbow is a real game, but I sort of thought it was a joke when I first saw it. Then I remembered how strange Japanese games can be. It’s funny because we look at the trailer and think of how gay the game looks (literally), but I really don’t think that’s the intention for Japanese audiences. The Japanese look at characters like this and Tingle and King of all Cosmos (from Katamari Damacy) and just think they are funny and quirky. I could be wrong, but I think it’s just a culture thing. Nevertheless, I guarantee you this game will never be released in the U.S.

I know we’re asking for it with this comic, but let’s keep the comments civil and clean please!

2. dj75728 says:

Frag no! You camper potting pumpernickel sniffers! Go marmalade yourself!

But yeah…Hmm….I guess Ray does need Tim after all……Umm……I like the logo this week?

It’s okay, I just don’t really get it, or I just don’t really find it funny. Is it supposed to be ironic by saying that the Japanese aren’t trying to make the game seem homosexual, but that’s the way it ends up? I guess I get it šŸ˜• ……..3/5

*Edit* HIS RAINBOWS ARE ALL OFF!!!! ROY G. BIV PEOPLE!!!! ROY G. BIV!!!

3. D3vin says:

Funny comic, As an American gamer I too often forget what they have as games in japan.
And besides, the whole rainbow thing was already taken in “Rainbow Islands: the story of Bubble Bobble 2” :).
I was surprised that ‘quirky’ Japanese games like Mr. Mosquito and WarioWare made it this far. It is only a matter of time before this comes here… albeit edited to a shadow of it’s former self and less rainbow-y. At least Japan isn’t afraid to make games like this. If a game like this was made in America all the bible-holding granny’s would have a heart attack…

Pretty colorful logo btw guys

4. Tim says:

So D3vin, does this mean you aren’t boycotting 2P START!? šŸ˜‰

5. steve-ohs says:

Wow, I was IMing my friend about this game right now. He can’t wait for it come out. I think the comic’s great. Though I wonder how they can make it more homosexual

6. tustin says:

Great comic. I love the comic timing! It looked like a funky game show at first, and then you saw the chest and the hands… Zooming out slowly… Brilliant Execution!

Oh and the idea was okay too.

šŸ™‚ I liked it actually, I thought it was hilarious. Good job Ray.

PS. Tim, did you do somthing to the website recently? This morning IE and firefox were freezing when they tried to come here, and now IE isn’t rendering the site properly (all the pngs have opaque backgrounds, the comment boxes are square instead of rounded, bold text is pixelated and seems streached). Maybe it’s just my computer, but I have come here before on this computer… Hmm…

7. Tim says:

Tustin,
Must be on your end. The png issue was something they resolved with IE7. I’m seeing things fine here.

8. tustin says:

You’re right. I am using IE6 here… Sorry about that.

Ah, it comes up in Firefox now, where it wasn’t loading before. Was the site down earlier today?

Oh well, thanks. Nice Comic again! šŸ™‚

9. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Nice comic guys. The end made me laugh out loud a bit. I still haven’t seen the video for it yet. For some reason, it won’t play it on my computer. Maybe it’s gay-proof? I’m kidding, mostly.

10. DrOswald says:

Haha, great comic. This is why I like you guys so much.

This is probably too much to ask, but if Ray made a wall paper of Captain Rainbow in the common Captain Falcon pose it would be awesome Or better yet, a Captain Rainbow vs. Captain Falcon wallpaper.

11. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Ok, I just saw it on Youtube. It looks very… strange. What’s up with the yo-yo?

12. Tristan says:

hmm, i use firefox and eariler today i got a ‘problem loading site’

13. dj75728 says:

Ray, you should’ve put a yo-yo string coming out of the logo, so everyone knew that it was supposed to be his yo-yo.

14. tustin says:

@DrOswald: But you don’t understand, that would require MORE WORK from Ray. And Ray doesn’t like to do more work than is nessasary. If you want a background from the comic, then Ray can cut and paste it over to a wallpaper.

(Please note intensive use of italics in above comment)

@dj75728: That’s a Yo-yo?! Wow… *YMCA begins playing in head*

15. Ray says:

Ray, you shouldā€™ve put a yo-yo string coming out of the logo, so everyone knew that it was supposed to be his yo-yo.

But you donā€™t understand, that would require MORE WORK from Ray.

Ironically, I started to incorporate the string into the logo but scrapped it when I deemed it was more work than necessary.

16. Zach says:

Dear Ray,

This is about the bestest thing ever.

Love,

Me.

17. DrOswald says:

Yeah, I know. I wasn’t actually hoping for the wallpaper, just saying it would be cool. I don’t really like the pose in panel 5. I’m sure I could find some Captain Rainbow wallpaper somewhere, but I like Ray’s style. Dreaming is free, right?

Come to think of it, it is probably good that wallpaper doesn’t exist. It would end up on my work machine, someone would be offended, and I would have to go to sensitivity training. Not worth it.

18. Darkness_Keeper says:

Tim and Ray –

Thank you.

DrOswald – Yeah, but I think most of us have done something that awkward/offensive at least once.

19. dj75728 says:

Similar to the situation regarding the Strong Bad comic, I’m the odd man out again. Maybe I just don’t find humor in gay jokes anymore, oh well. My bad as the kids say.

20. lwelyk says:

NCG!

My first reaction to seeing Captain Gay Pride Rainbow was the same thing. But I still want it, it seems interesting.

21. Its rofl awsome Keep it up

This got a chuckle out of me. But it’s not bad enough to warrant hate mail…

As for the game, I’m more worried about what it’ll do to Mario characters. I hope Birdo’s the only one…she kinda fits in…

24. moonjuice7 says:

Birdo would seem appropriate

(P.S. Yay for my first comment…)

He.

26. hoopla says:

Hate mail is definitely deserved here, but not to Ray… Because you guys are right, this will -never- come stateside. So maybe, just maybe to Nintendo for not having the balls to do such. But much more so to American society for largely being so intolerant still.

P.S. Tim, in Safari, the comment numbers appear on top of the comment text, making the comments a bit difficult to read… Doesn’t ruin my day or anything but thought it might be helpful to drop word…

27. Snifit says:

I don’t really see anything offensive. Its not as though Ray is saying that gay is bad. It seems to me like a comic on how Japan sees things and the U.S. sees things, so in a way its a social commentary with an international and cross cultural setting.

…or it could just be a joke about too many rainbows.

28. FluffyPanda says:

Hi, I’ve been reading and listening since the start of the site, but not so far only posted once to share Wii friend codes.

So, I should probably start my delurk with a hearty “NCG!”

Anyway, I really just registered to tell you that you owe me a new mouse wheel. The wear and tear caused by vertical scrolling on your comics is starting to take its toll. Maybe next week you could just have a repeating background in a 1 million pixel tall iframe?

Also, I’m looking forward to Captain Rainbow 2: Disco Hairdresser YoYo Super Fun Adventures. I’ve heard it comes with a special controller… that you operate with your mouth.

The Nintendo health and safety warnings for that would be awesome.

29. Lilguitarist says:

Ah, we Brits love a ruddy good old gay joke!

Jolly good show boys (aka: NCG)

30. kalamari says:

32. Kip says:

People are saying that it’s not coming to America because of intolerance, and I don’t think that’s really accurate. The game is not actually gay, it just uses a style that is very closely associated with homosexuality in America. It wouldn’t come out here like that because people would be embarrassed to buy it. It’s simple marketing and economics, not intolerance, at work here. And it’s not like gay people would be more prone to buy it than any other game since it’s not actually a gay game. (Yes, I understand that gays play the same games as the rest of us, but what I mean is that an actual gay game would probably appeal to gays more than the rest of us, whereas a not-gay game wouldn’t have any special appeal to gay gamers.)

33. roadjcat says:

He.

I was actually going to put that in parentheses, but I think there’s multiple Birdos like there are multiple Yoshis. The American birdos are female, the Japanese birdos are male, and I guess since this a Japanese game (so far) birdo is in fact male, and then I suppose fits in even better…

34. Phil says:

I have to say, as a homosexual male…that was flippin’ awesome.

35. Kvb says:

It’s a shame but probably true. This game will never EVER make it to the US. You guys didn’t even get Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland.

There might be a slight hope for us Europeans, though. We DID get Tingle’s game. (It rocked and you should play it, by the way.)

36. Wasd (version 3.4.16b Hi-Def Edition) says:

Holy cr- oh wait, it’s a Japanese game.

Seriously, I was almost surprised, until I realized it was Japanese. If you have played any of the Katamari games, rainbows and brightly-colored animals no longer look gay or childish. Just – weird. I have no idea how they perfected such mind-control!

37. tustin says:

You’re thinking way too much into this. Simple fact: If people didn’t wear their sexuality on their sleeves, then the whole “gayness” thing wouldn’t even exist. Nobody was “gay” back in the forties and fifties because no one openly expressed it or made a gigantic deal out of it like they do now.

My opinion, let people be homosexual, don’t push their needs on me, and when the homosexuals die off because they can’t reproduce, so be it. šŸ™‚

(I can see hate-filled comments flooding in now)

39. mkava says:

OK, that’s just plain hilarious. At first, I thought it was Captain Falcon.. Rainbow Edition (I always play as Captain Hump-A-Lot in Smash Bros… pink Captain Falcon… another joke about him running in a gay parade..). When I realized I was wrong, I laughed even harder.
Also, Birdo plus this guy… especially a Birdo with a man’s voice.. oh boy. xD
Thanks for the chuckle, Ray. šŸ˜€

Tim: I think its safe to say that Ray can’t get rid of you. First off, he needs you to write the comics. Second, he needs you to keep the site running. šŸ˜€

41. Lava says:

NCG… haha, I was thinking that was a pretty gay game, even if I can appreciate a rainbow and the color purple in a natural way.

Hey question for Ray; Do you ever use some kind of Wacom Tablet, or just the pen tool? Also, I think you’ve mentioned it before, but do you use Photoshop exclusively, or do you also use Illustrator or something along those lines? (Maybe I should have just shot you an e-mail… any followups will be done that way.) Peace!

@Tim, No I’m not boycotting 2pS! As it is the only webcomic I read. there is no way I’m going to read VgCats as the art style is lame and I complain with it on so many levels. if I had wanted to see cats in cosplay I’d just search up some random lolcat…

The entire comic is done using the pen tool in Illustrator. There’s a very minor amount of Photoshop used afterwards to touch up the colors a little.

I don’t use a Wacom tablet, but that’s something I’m interested in investigating…. someday….

I read Ctrl+Alt+Del now, after you guys pointed out the miscarriage arc. I like CAD because there’s a continuing story, and I think the miscarriage fit in well enough. But I still come back to 2P START! because of the people here. *hug!* *cough* šŸ™‚

I… well, I’m not gonna pull any punches. I think the concept of it being shown in a dark room held great potential. It’s just the gay joke that makes everything fall apart. To me, it seems, this was a missed opportunity to jab at Reggie’s complete misunderstanding of “core gamers.” After all, he introduced Animal Crossing on Gamecube as something for the more casual gamer. It was a missed chance to jab at Nintendo and redirected at a gay joke… which is very rare when one is actually funny. Sorry guys…

48. roadjcat says:

I really think that people have complained enough about Nintendo and Reggie. Any more would’ve been too much.

I completely agree! I love both of those other comics as well, and I do appreciate how they are kept PG-13. I like VG Cats too, but I don’t find it as consistently funny as the others.

Rainbows don’t mean gay in Japan, that’s really just a crazy Western thing. Though it is somewhat a shame that some only see rainbow and think it’s homosexual. No rainbow, it would just be strange right?

Too bad though, a game like Okami mixed with Viewtiful Joe by the makers of Chibi Robo in a world with various Nintendo characters such as Little Joe, it’s going to be a good game.

Funny comic though.

61. orinthe says:

Just a note, for those that don’t realize–rainbows are simply not associated with homosexuality in Japan. The Japanese gay movement (tiny and ignored as it is) makes use of them to some extent, but there’s no mainstream association like there is in America. You can find plenty of places of business in Japan, bars for example, that have rainbow motifs or logos. As an American, you’d expect that they are gay bars, but in all likelihood they are just a plain old bar!
