Honestly, if we couldn’t make fun of Sonic, what would we have? A 3.9 on IGN and promise for new Werehog games? Yikes, that’s scary. On another note, while I always hope our comics are funny to most people that read them, I do realize that some comics are a little more niche than others. For that reason, sometimes a little perspective might be in order.
As a long-time Sonic fan, “Sonic and the Black Knight” simply hurts to even look at. At this point, I’m almost ashamed to say I even recognize the guy.

Wow! In hindsight, it’s the most obvious joke that no one has made yet!
But, more to the point, I definitely feel for you, man. Bringing back the werehog is a moronic idea. Why Sega is choosing to do so is beyond me, other than the possibility that they no longer have any other ideas on how to pad out a Sonic game.
As for Matt’s IGN review, well, it’s disappointing, crushingly so, but I’m not going to take a single review as law. I’m personally waiting to see how other sites respond before I think of it as a critical success or failure.

Also have you read review, I’ve read papers from first graders more detailed then Matt’s review of the game. I actually think he gets some sort of sick pleasure from demonizing Sonic. He likes it lower and lower…

I am proud to be in on this joke. I got the Monty Python reference too. Ooh, burn. I’m going to continue to like Sonic, pretend this game doesn’t exist, and hold out that the next big Sonic game will be more like Unleashed’s day stages with the Werehog appearing as a spiritual sequel if at all (eg: Sonic and Knuckles, with Knuckles playing similarly to the Werehog. Or something. I’unno.).

Gah! Everyone misinterprets this, he said if there is an Unleashed 2, the Werehog will return. He’s the special thing exclusive to that game. How many Sonic games had sequels? The originals, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Advance, Sonic Drift, and Sonic Riders. Not that many considering how many he’s been in. I doubt there will be an Unleashed 2.

I didn’t get it at first, and after watching the Youtube video, I still didn’t find it that funny. The art must have taken a really long time to do though. The swords and all the armour, lpus the lighting effects. It’s an okay comic. You really have to know about the Monty Python thing though…

To be honest, this is the first comic of all your comics that I “meh”-ed at. Sorry, this joke is waaay past old for me. It’s like the first thing I thought of when I heard the name.
That being said this comic has one of my absolute favorite panels in all your comics. I absolutely love the drawing of Sonic’s sneakers in the first panel. That’s it, I have to…I’m calling for a wallpaper of the first panel without the word balloon. The pic is just so…epic.

Sucks that Sonic has to break your heart time and time again, Ray, but the Black Doom Awards that follow it are always absolutely delicious!
Perhaps it would have been funnier if you had the Black Knight from the game in the same predicament as the Monty Python black knight.
And yeah, SatBK is in some ways worse than ’06. With 06, they were at least trying to make a game, but they weren’t given enough time and didn’t know what they were doing. With SatBK, they knew -exactly- what they were doing and did it anyway.

I’m curious if this game is even selling? I love Sonic, not nearly as much as Ray or some folks here, but I just can’t watch anymore. He’s been in waaay too many mediocre games. đ

I have Sonic and the Black Knight (Got it today and have been playing it), and despite its flaws it’s WAY better than what IGN says.
I still say people exaggerate over Sonic’s situation. It’s like everyone who makes fun of/criticize him just can’t let go of the Sonic Next-Gen disaster.
Hey guys, sorry I don’t know where to exactly post for “Wise fwum your guave” but I’ve been a long time reader and have been listening to the podcasts for the last two months.
I like your guys style, and Ray has the same tastes in games I do. (I’m also a Sonic fan.)
That said, I gotta say this weeks comic is a bit on the weak side. That Black Knight joke’s been done to death. It would have behooved you to wait ’till next week when you had a better idea of what the game is like.
Speaking of, Ray, Tim, I beseech you to please make another comic to rip into Matt ‘Assamesina. His review of SATBK is nothing short of a horrible joke. As someone who’s currently playing the game, I can tell you it’s nowhere near a 3.9. It’s decent. Around a 6.5 – 7.5. IGN’s journalistic integrity is an absolute joke. If this game had anyone other than Sonic in it, it would have received a 6.9 or higher from them.
Awesome comic guys! A little dark visually, but the comic’s about the joke in the text less than the visuals this week. Any Monty Python humor is appreciated, and somehow I didn’t realize the whole Black Knight thing until now.

Hey Tim & Ray – I’ve been following the site since sometime two years ago, but I’ve never felt the time was right to say hello. With the addition of the “Rise From Your Grave” segment (great Altered Beast reference, by the way), I decided that the time was finally right. You guys do a lot of great work, and the comics make me laugh every week. Still, I have to say that the podcasts are my favorite part of the site; when you guys get going, I have to laugh out loud right along with you. It makes for some uncomfortable bus rides.
Keep up the good work, and keep doing what you do best. The site has come a long way, and so has your readership. I think that we’ve all enjoyed watching 2P Start grow in popularity, and whenever we see you in the Joystiq Webcomic Wrap-Up, I think we regular readers feel a bit proud. I havent posted a comment for the past few weeks. But today’s comic slapped me and said “Damn it Tim, make a comment” so here I am commenting.
Great strip, I think this is my favorite strip of any Webcomic. I am a huge Python fan, and just seeing the Black Knight, and his limbless body, it just makes everything so damn perfect.
Well, whenever I hear it, I think of something like this.

Every time I hear that sample it brings me crashing back to the disappointment of getting that game on the Genesis (or Megadrive, as it was called over here). Man that was a bad game.

I’ve played the game for a few hours yesterday, (gonna probably complete it today) and it’s not a 3.9.
That is not to say it’s an excellent game. It’s still fast, but not as fast as unleashed (on the Wii for reference) and the controls need a little tightening, though most of the stages are pretty narrow and there is some sort of auto turn on the harder ones I’ve encountered.
This is a decent game, maybe a 6.5 ish.
My main complaint is it’s level design. It’s bland and after some of the levels in Unleashed, it’s a let down to see the levels work around the gimmick instead of the levels assisting the gimmick.

I have to agree. I played this for about an 1 and 1/2 hrs yesterday and you know what, I was pleasantly surprised. TBH, i was kinda glad they slowed it down, cause while unleashed was a fun experience (on 360 only), I don’t always want break-neck speeds. And forget Twilight Princess, Sonic uses the sword better in this game than Link does in his.
By and far, my favorite part of the game, though, is the music. It’s not the typical Sonic music (fitting for a not-so-typical Sonic game) and despite the fact that we laughed at it having a “Celtic” theme (you know who you are…..Ray! lol) it’s an enjoyable piece of work.
Bottom line: SatBK –> 7.0

I had to say – I like the comic a lot, great stuff.
As for the Black Knight, wouldn’t it be great if HE was the new Sonic sidekick in the game, like Knuckles or Chip? He could spout lines like “HAVE AT THEE!” or “I’ll bite your legs off!” when he and Sonic come upon an enemy. Surely the Black Knight could perform a spin dash.
XD I LOVE the “Have at thee!” line idea. Would be the most annoying companion of all time. Possibly even Omochao!

Sonic’s been in so many bad games, nobody is going to even look at the good one if it ever comes out. (Poor Sonic Rush and Sonic Chronicles. I admit though, SC was not what it could of been, but it was better then the recent stuff Sega has been barfin’ up.)
