Mega Man’s Workout

TimThank Ray for this comic. This is probably what the last Mega Man sprite comic should have been, but we just couldn’t quite get it right. I’m glad Ray decided to bring the idea back because it was always a good one to me. Also, thanks again for all the comments about Sarah and Lily! I’ll post some more pictures soon and I’ll be sure to talk about my little one in the next podcast!

Ray I’ve been waiting so long to do that second panel that I would have been happy with it being its own comic…. but I figured you guys would probably want a little bit more than that….

I registered just to say what a great Megaman comic! 🙂

  2. Anon says:

    Old joke, but great presentation.
    Second panel is hilarious!
But, I think you missed a few jokes with sliding and disappearing block puzzles.

    Updating early today too huh?

  3. Tacos says:

NCG. Not a huge Mega Man fan, but I still understand. But don’t you think you could’ve turned this into a Lace comic somehow?

  4. Daecious says:

    Now THATS a megaman comic.

  5. Haniko says:

Is it a good idea to tell your father figure you want to shoot up? Keke, obvious drug reference.
All part of the formula I guess.

  6. Kvb says:

    Not a fan.

This is a joke that other webcomics would make.
And, really, every other webcomic already has made this joke.

  7. ultimateDK says:

Hehe, nice. yeah, i vote wallpaper for 2nd panel also 😀

  8. MetaRidleyR27 says:

I love the second panel! I do that all the time in Mega Man games. The firing up joke is a little overused, but I’m impressed with the shading for the characters. It gives a good sense of style to relatively simple sprites. Great job guys!

  9. Airknight says:

Mega Man and Samus need to get together and work on that vertical target practice.

  10. RedVinnie says:

i agree with ray. this is what the last comic should have been. yeah, the shooing up joke is just a little bit over used, but if its funny, its ok. the second panel is absolutely hilarious!

  11. The Gastronomic Gamer says:

I really hope that 2P Start! Doesn’t end soon. Screw going out with a bang. It’s a more dramatic end, but we won’t remember 2P Start! for the end. We’ll remember the whole thing together. A woman once asked a man, “Do you drink wine?” “Yes.” “But doesn’t it give you a headache?” “Yeah…eventually. But the first and middle parts are AMAZING.”

Don’t you see? 2P Start! still has life in it! Why end it when it has a chance to be even greater? I care about this comic, Tim, Ray. If you can still somehow churn out a comic a week with everything else in your lives, at least make it to the end of the year. I just can’t see 2P Start! ending on such a sour note as this comic.

  12. ultimateDK says:

my only question is what does the comic picture on the home page have to do with the comic aside from the megaman helmet? it looks like someone coughed up a megaman hairball.

  13. Ray says:

This is a joke that other webcomics would make.
And, really, every other webcomic already has made this joke.

Can you link me to some examples? I’m curious to see what their takes on the joke was.

  14. ultimateDK says:

is that an actual sprite of megaman from panel 4, or is that aq made up one? he looks like he’s scratching his armpit like a monkey 🙂

  15. roadjcat says:

Kinda funny. I’m not a fan of Mega Man, so that’s why it wasn’t totally funny, but it got a chuckle out of me.

  16. marcod says:

Good comic. The toe grab was funny! The only criticism have about this comic is that he first panel looks a bit too dark and uses the satin effect a bit too much. Other then that, the comic is great! 🙂

  17. TomX says:

Thanks guys for redeeming yourself in the Megaman comic realm. Keep up the good work, don’t let 2P Start! die!

  18. Dominator_101 says:

😀 I love the second panel. I always love how that happens in a ton of side scrolling games. Nice comic!

  19. solidmatt56 says:

Although I am scared to rise from my grave because John is going to come and find me, I am going to anyways.
Great comic this week, as always. I have enjoyed every single one so far, and will continue to every week. Great job guys!

  20. Narnian says:

Not being a Megaman fan, I didn’t think this was as funny, but I totally get the second panel, having played plenty of side scrollers. Nice comic guys! As has already been said, definitely better than the last Megaman comic. 🙂

  21. Jonny Niko says:

I felt this comic was a bit formulaic with what you’ve done before. It starts off great, but then looses it’s steam……

You know what? Who am I kidding. It is a great comic and found myself laughing even through the second read through.

Even my wife laughed (after I explained how megaman works)

    So good job guys.

  22. Snifit says:

Nice comic. I like the treadmill bit myself, gotta love Metal Man’s stage. The logo was nice as well.

And Ray, this is the only comic I know of to make the up joke:
    http://www.duelinganalogs.com/comic/2006/09/06/dr-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel/

  23. Ray says:

is that an actual sprite of megaman from panel 4, or is that aq made up one? he looks like he’s scratching his armpit like a monkey

It’s edited, but that is how he normally places his other hand.

  24. It’s still alive! ALIVE!

Great comic guys. Contra does what Mega don’t.

  25. D3vin says:

Good one, Since I suck at Mega Man, this rings all too true to me.

  26. BulimicKoala says:

Finally a comic without the gay innuendo. Good job guys (I know it was very hard for you to do)

  27. BadnikHunter says:

Though the shooting up is probably the main focus, the toe grab endurance is my favorite panel :D. NCG!

  28. Somewhere, secretly, sinisterly, Dr. Light is laughing his @$$ off inside one of those holographic capsules.

I love it! Seriously, great comic guys. And I’m not just saying that because I’m deluded.

  29. sheppy says:

Okay, somehow I pictured the last panel to be Megaman shaking down Metalman for the buzzsaws… not sure why. Aside from the fact that Megaman is a bit of a bully.

That said, I don’t mind sprite comics, really I don’t. Some do, whatever. The thing that is annoying me about Ray’s sprite comics, which are otherwise lightyears ahead from the tragic abortions of photoshop known in general as sprite comics, are your glowing edges.

Please kill the glowing edges! I know they keep the sprites from blending in the background but that’s what you WANT to have happen! Especially when you put in nice shadow effects on the character that START past the glowing…. okay, enough of a rant.

    Good comic guys…

  30. Ray says:

I have a love/hate relationship with them myself. To clarify, they are included for the purpose of keeping with every other 2P START! comic in which the main characters are outlined with transparent white. Though one could argue that, since this is a sprite-comic, I would be allowed to break that rule.

  31. Pi says:

Is it a good idea to tell your father figure you want to shoot up? Keke, obvious drug reference. All part of the formula I guess.

    I UNDERSTAND!

This comic is a reference to the Mario steroids comic! In both of them, the main character ‘shoots up’ and then throws a huge flaming ball of energy! I swear, this comic got twice as funny once I realized the obvious reference! NCG, guys. It’s this kind of secret joke that only the hardcores fans would get that keeps me coming back.

  32. mocliamtoh says:

I love the second panel. I always love how that happens in a ton of side scrolling games. Nice comic!

Hey Dominator, I heard you’re the guy…I wanna be the guy too!

NCG. I really agree with the requests for wallpaper. BTW, I like the health bar logo.

  33. Gadoink says:

    That is freaking AWESOME.

  34. Gadoink says:

Mega Man and Samus need to get together and work on that vertical target practice.

Uh, actually Samus CAN shoot up, last I checked.

  35. Zoltan says:

That’s how Dr. Wiley can defeat Meganan, just invent “CeilingMan” with his special power being… um… Bucket on Head Bomb!!! Or better yet: SUPER GEESE POO!!!!!!!

  36. Matteron says:

great comic…!!! hey u guys still have do another lace comic

  37. ultimateDK says:

Mega Man and Samus need to get together and work on that vertical target practice.

Uh, actually Samus CAN shoot up, last I checked.

Probably a Smash Bros. reference, where Samus can’t shoot vertically. Thank goodness.

  38. elah says:

Indeed, anything is possible, except when you need it to be.

  39. BrightNeko says:

    lovely presentation =D

    but I don’t remember a light bulb in quickman’s stage O_o nor a conveyor belt in crashman’s stage >.>

still love X at the end XD

  40. Kvb says:

Can you link me to some examples? I’m curious to see what their takes on the joke was.

I’d love to, but it’s been far too long. Most of the comics that did this joke are old sprite comic of about 7 years ago. Most of them were the story-driven kind of comics. Bob and George was probably one of them.

  41. Haniko says:

Or perhaps a lot of them did the joke that this joke is overdone? Hm? And after seven years, I would think the joke would be fresh again.

  42. Doopliss says:

This is unrelated and out of the blue, but would you ever make a Kirby comic?

  43. Ryman says:

Alright, it’s time for Ryman’s 3rd player analyzation of the comic! Yes, even this comic has it’s symbolism.

Let’s start with the treadmill, shall we? You see, Ray is trying his hardest to keep the site on the track it’s going!

Next, the second panel reflects how Tim is on the edge of falling off the 2P Start platform, thus falling to the death of his “childhood” to take care of his baby girl.

But the treasure lies in the last half of the comic.

You see, Ray is really Megaman, and Tim is Dr. Light. Ray really wants to raise 2P Start to the Zenith of it’s run. Unfortunently, Tim is holding him back by not giving him the necessary tools. Thus, Ray can never “shoot” for that target of the best web comic ever, so he has to settle with a new look and a more powerful punch.

But, you see, Ray didn’t realize something:

He can just jump for that health pack.

  44. roadjcat says:

Mega Man and Samus need to get together and work on that vertical target practice.

Uh, actually Samus CAN shoot up, last I checked.

Probably a Smash Bros. reference, where Samus can’t shoot vertically. Thank goodness.

She also can’t shoot vertically in the original Metroid. And I don’t think she can in the second one.

  45. MetaRidleyR27 says:

She also can’t shoot vertically in the original Metroid. And I don’t think she can in the second one.

She can shoot vertically in both Metroid 1 and 2.

I think what Airknight meant was that since Samus can shoot vertically, she could give Mega Man a few pointers.

  46. Ryman says:

Is it a good idea to tell your father figure you want to shoot up? Keke, obvious drug reference. All part of the formula I guess.

Hey now! Finding out deeper meanings to the comic is -my- job! Lawl, jk jk.

  47. D3vin says:

I think most of you are looking too deep into these things. It is about MegaMan’s lack of vertical shooting, and how that hasn’t changed while everyone else has.

  48. BulimicKoala says:

I think most of you are looking too deep into these things. It is about MegaMan’s lack of vertical shooting, and how that hasn’t changed while everyone else has.

Well that’s because Megaman didn’t use the steroids.

  49. steve-ohs says:

So 2Pstart is telling us that we all have flaws and that we should learn to embrase them. Even heroes have flaws. Thank you Tim and Ray for the insperational message. I think we all are learning from your wisdom.

  50. Quarma says:

The funny thing? Bass can shoot in eight directions, but Mega Man can only fire in one. One would wonder how Wily loses so much if he can develop 45 degree firing…

  51. roadjcat says:

She also can’t shoot vertically in the original Metroid. And I don’t think she can in the second one.

She can shoot vertically in both Metroid 1 and 2.
I think what Airknight meant was that since Samus can shoot vertically, she could give Mega Man a few pointers.

Oh yeah. XD I just never played those games very much because there were other directions she couldn’t aim at.

  52. I gotta say, this comic quite good. It is one of those special ones that makes me chuckle…

It has a special spot in my iPod humorous picture library (Before all the Failblogs)

  53. Gadoink says:

Indeed, anything is possible, except when you need it to be.

    Oh hi there Elah 😉

  54. ultimateDK says:

I think most of you are looking too deep into these things.

2P Start! fans looking deep into the comics?? Us?? Never….;)

  55. Luka Tuka says:

Technically, mega man could shoot up with the Metal Man power up.
    yes. i am a nerd.

  56. BadnikHunter says:

Indeed, anything is possible, except when you need it to be.

    Oh hi there Elah

Gadoink, i think we should stop referencing The Spindash over here, unless it completely involves the spindash.

  57. Lozaiah says:

    I haven’t really played Megaman..
So he really doesn’t ever Shoot up??

  58. DrOswald says:

In Mega Man X 7 he can tilt his gun up about 30 degrees, but that’s about it.

  59. Hannz says:

*is glad 2p Start didn’t die*

  60. Cheeseball701 says:

I like the clean-cut way that Ray handles pixel art comics. It reminds me of Tetris DS.
