Just What the Doctor Ordered

TimThis comic was a lot of fun to do. After all the Dr. Mario talk in the podcast this week, I decided I wanted to do a Dr. Mario comic. I actually came up with 5 or 6 ideas that all could have worked, but this was the best. I would consider this comic a more story-based comic, like our Untold Origins/Embrace Your Destiny comics (this could be considered the sequel really). Most of our comics are gag-based, where there’s one main joke in the last panel and everything else is setup. These story-based ones are nice because while there’s still one main joke in the last panel, that’s only half the fun. We put in lots of little jokes scattered throughout, ‘easter eggs’ if you will. Hopefully you guys catch most of them (a couple of them only long-time 2P START! fans will get).
P.S. – Great job on the artwork, Ray!
P.P.S. – Today is my 3 year anniversary, yay! I love you, Sarah!

Fantastic guys! You two have really outdone yourselves. Very funny stuff.

Found easter eggs! Koopa and Goomba are also sitting in the waiting room(untold origins/embrace your destiny), and the “Sonic is in Brawl” certificate from waaaaay back when is hanging on the wall in Dr.Mario’s office.

    Edit: 1st!

  2. Taco! says:

Well I noticed Goomba and Koopa Troopa (aka the newest Pokemon) are sitting in the waiting room. And then theres Sonic’s certificate on the wall of his entry to Brawl. Thats all I caught on the first time through

Edit: Darn, I thought I would be first, but DJ##### beat me by a second (literally)

  3. dj75728 says:

Whoops, I must have forgot in my rush to be first. Happy anniversary Tim and Sarah! You get a green smiley ->

    P.S. Tim, it’s P.S.S., not P.P.S.

  4. Andrew says:

Happy Anniversary! My third anniversary was two weeks ago.

    NCG!

I like how the chart on the wall shows that people have the bottle shape stage as their insides.

And DJ54321, you are wrong about the P.S. thing and it’s all your fault.

    Oops! Your right. P.S.S. is Post-subscript, and P.P.S. is Post-postscript. My bads >_< I blame dragons >.>

Hey everybody, it’d be really cool if ya’ll could go download Firefox 3 on release day to help them break the world record for most downloads in 24 hours.

    Really great. 😀

  8. Narnian says:

Loved the certificates in the background and Koopa and Goomba in the foreground. 😀 Thought for sure there would be a dragon or World Ends w/ You reference in there somewhere though 😉

    I blame dj.

  9. dr. mario says:

I hate pills with lots of side efects

  10. D3vin says:

The Dr. Mario rushing to the screen is probably a reference to comic ‘Untold Origins’, It is not a copy/paste/edit but Mario says the ‘It’s-a me’ thing in it too… and the same Poster is on the back wall of the office…

When I try to put a bunch of in-jokes into MY comic it doesn’t get noticed… *sniffle* I like this week’s logo btw.

  11. Love the old comic references. And the warning labels. But, I must say the best one is the one upside down warning on the Medication label. Genius. Great comic.

Happy Anniversary to you and your wife!

and looking at the mii, i think i may have raced you once on kart o.O

  12. lwelyk says:

Yes, the upside down one is pure awesome.

    And my condolences to Sarah!

  13. Dragonblader1 says:

Yes. Dj. Always blame him or Rioluke. always

    Koopa and Goomba.
    Sonic’s in Brawl poster.
It’sa me- sequence from the Koopa and Goomba comic.
Warning: Mushroom Kingdom Law Prohibits The Transfer Of This Drug To Another Person Other Than Those Registered Through Friend Codes.

Who eats 17,280 times a day?

    Banner owns btw.

  14. Tim says:

I would just like to say that I love the warning labels!

  15. Rokai says:

The shine on TiMii and the kart Copy/Pasted onto the box may be eggs.

  16. Troy says:

Great Comic. The comics always seem to please.

  17. mocliamtoh says:

I have a problem with the Banner at the top. Most of the pills would dissapear ’cause there are four in a row…how do you get them to stay like that?!?!?!

  18. tustin says:

Who eats 17,280 times a day?

My grandmother. She cooks all the time and never stops cooking. And the first and last thing she always says to you is “Did you eat?” (usually coming immediately after “hello” and always after “goodbye” where she proceeds to stuff you with armfuls of food items stuffed in breakable dishes, as she has never owned a piece of Tupperware in her life.) Did I mention that she’s Italian?

    Happy Anniversary Tim and Sarah!

BTW, I kind of like the story comics better than the simple joke comics. Story comics are great! 🙂

  19. tustin says:

Oh, yeah. And this adds to the count:
number of times Tim has been in a comic++
Anyone keeping score? (I guess I need to start)

  20. Ali says:

I read all your comics (as soon as i came here i started from number one) and i love all the jokes on Mario. I loved the super mario galaxy one but mario just didn’t do it for me on the shinyness. You could have made him a lot glossier and added light. Oh well maybe next time.

P.S. I am very high while writing this, in fact I’m higher than hilltop zone

    P.S.S. Happy Anniversary

    P.S.S.S I love saying P.S. P.S. P.S. P.S. P.S….. *faints*

  21. Tristan says:

hah! i found one that nobody seems to have pointed out yet! in the 3rd and 6th panels, on the left is the doctor mario pill bottle anatomy poster, which also showed up in the untold orginis/embrace your destiny with koopa and goomba.

also, when is there going to be a WEWY comic? =(

P.S. if people hadnt pointed them out, i would have never notcied koopa and goomba in the waiting room, or the ‘sonic is in brawl’ certificate. i might have noticed koopa and goomba on my own by tomoroow, but i would have never seen the ‘sonic is in brawl’ poster at all.

P.S.S. who the flip could take 17280 tablets a day? with food, no less?

  22. Andrew says:

P.S.S. who the flip could take 17280 tablets a day? with food, no less?

You have to remember that the pills don’t digest, they simply line up and disappear. As long as you take them in the right order and orientation, they won’t fill you up at all.

  23. dj75728 says:

Is the fact that if you take some of the numbers from the Rx# and some of the numbers from how many tablets TiMii is supposed take you can make 75728 an easter egg  ?

hah! i found one that nobody seems to have pointed out yet! in the 3rd and 6th panels, on the left is the doctor mario pill bottle anatomy poster, which also showed up in the untold orginis/embrace your destiny with koopa and goomba.

Actually D3vin already pointed out the poster.

P.S. I am very high while writing this, in fact I’m higher than hilltop zone

    Umm…..I hope that’s a joke.

  24. I about did a spit-take when Mario jumped out in the second panel. That will always make me laugh, so I say put it in every comic.

Loved seeing Tim as a Mii, as opposed to the ‘cartoon’ version of himself.

  25. zhinker says:

I’m not seeing any comments from Tim and Ray here. Come on guys, how about letting us know if we’re missing an easter egg or two.

  26. Tim says:

Well, I don’t think anyone has mentioned anything SPECIFIC about Koopa that might be easter egg-ish…

  27. Flume says:

    Long-time lurker, first-time commenter – NCG!

Well, I don’t think anyone has mentioned anything SPECIFIC about Koopa that might be easter egg-ish…

Is it the pokeball? I’m assuming no one mentioned it because anyone who notices Koopa would straight away see the bright-red ‘shell.’ Or is it something else?

  28. OmegaLord says:

I assumed he was a red Koopa.

  29. Narnian says:

Yeah Koopa is in a pokeball like in the previous comic.

    Tim said

I would just like to say that I love the warning labels!

    Ooh, another Tim ^_^ Confusing…

  30. Andrew says:

So… Does the RSS feed for comments not catch all the new comments, or is it just me?

  31. Rokai says:

We got lots of things but I bet there are some dragons or death zones or nubs waiting for us just to find them.

  32. Tristan says:

hey your right, koopa is in a pokeball. and yes, i forgot all you have to do to take the tablets is make them line up and they vanish.

…all of a sudden my brain made a connection between dr. mario and tetris. dont they both involve dropping things, lining up the things you drop, and making those things vanish? seroisly. did nintedo rip off tetris?

although dr. mario is still pretty different anyway. but you should make a comic comparing Dr. Mario to Tetris.

  33. dj75728 says:

Is it the pokeball? I’m assuming no one mentioned it because anyone who notices Koopa would straight away see the bright-red ’shell.’ Or is it something else?

I noticed it too, but didn’t think it had to be mentioned. But anyway, it’s more than likely a pokeball since the front/underbelly of the shell isn’t ever red(or green) but tan, but then again when Koopa wore the pokeball he wore it with the white side towards his front, so unless he switched it around……..

Edit: What the heck is on the bottom of the fifth panel(the one with TiMii’s mouth open)? It’s been bothering the crap outta me.

  34. Andrew says:

I would say that you can see the tongue depressor that Dr. Mario is holding in Tim’s mouth.

  35. dj75728 says:

I would say that you can see the tongue depressor that Dr. Mario is holding in Tim’s mouth.

THANK YOU!!! Man that was bugging the bejeesus out of me too >.<

“Tetris & Dr. Mario” for the SNES was the very first time I played either game. I think sticking both games together on the same cartridge was Nintendo’s way of giving a nod to the original Tetris.

  37. Dragonblader1 says:

We got lots of things but I bet there are some dragons or death zones or nubs waiting for us just to find them.

Nah. But if you look closely in the first panel at the scribbles above Timii’s head (or, as I found it in all of the scribbles in a different position, you can look at it in basically any panel. Ray’s laziness shows itself) you can kinda slightly make out a *is cut off by a lawnmower*

Yes! I can see it there is a-All hail the Hypnotoad!

erm, what? what is going on here? lawnmowers? hypnotoad? erm…….

  43. tustin says:

If it makes anyone feel differently (read “makes Tim feel better”) I didn’t notice the pokeball till everyone mentioned it and passed it off as if it was nothing…

Edit: Yes, the comment did go through, even though my power has blinked on and off at least 4 times now… Thank God for laptops.

  46. dj75728 says:

@Dragonblader1 & etc.: TWEWY is okay, pretty good music, but I fear it’ll get annoying soon if it’s the same songs looped. combat is pretty cool, especially using both screens at the same time, works the mind, but I don’t like the stylus combat yet. Don’t like the plot cause it started with “7 DAYS!!!!”. After finishing the first day, which was very short, I hope the rest of the days are much much longer, although I expect they will be. And I like the Acronym TWEWY cause I no longer say The world ends blah blah…., now I just say Twewy(Tah-woo-wee) . I’ll put up another review later, when I’ve played it more. But I think I’ll like it. Doesn’t make me want a comic for it though, sawwy 😕 .

  47. Wes says:

Been reading this comic for a while, thought I’d finally say how much I like it ^^

And I love the friend code reference on the warning label. I really don’t like the way the fc system is set up on the Wii.

  48. Rioluke says:

    /; ‘

    interesting

  49. Jon M. says:

Oh my god, this comic is brilliant! I love the anatomy picture over on the left hand side that shows our insides as a pill bottle 🙂 Also, “17280 times daily” cracked me up! You guys never fail to please me with your comics. So much awesome! Thanks for the comic and keep up the good work!

  50. Nivomi says:

    That’s 12 times a minute! I don’t think I could take that.

    P.S. Miis are hollow?

  51. mocliamtoh says:

    I just noticed.

*COUGH* – Well Doc, coughing, aching, FEVER

Probably unintentional, but it could be a reference to the classic Dr. Mario music.

Then again, I probably am looking WAY too far into it.

  52. Saturn2888 says:

How do I say this. It’s a good comic but it’s really stupid. I think it could’ve been better. Maybe there should be one week a month where you go through and pick and random comic and then fix it up with a better joke.

  53. Kyonus says:

He got sick from sitting out in the cold from waaaaay back in the ‘when-the-console-is-off-or-summat-like-that’ comic didn’t he?

    Poor TiMii

  54. Dark-Star says:

You know a webcomic is funny if:

You actually get out of your seat and do all manner of contortions to read upside-down print.

  55. Mirby says:

But what if you have 17,281 viruses?

Also, I’m glad I can read text regardless of it’s orientation: the little stickers are great and do a good job of referencing classic Mario characters and such.

Also, I would not go to a doctor if he always flew out of a pipe and said, “It’s-a me, Ma- *ahem* I mean…”
