Missing The Target

TimI doubt anyone was expecting a followup to last week’s comic, but here we are! The idea that Captain Rainbow couldn’t possibly be released in the U.S. got us thinking of HOW it could be released, as in, what changes would need to be made? Obviously this is a bit overboard, but it would be more likely to sell in our GTA era (sadly). As we thought of what to do with the yoyo (dubbed the Death YoYo), we got to thinking that people would be expecting EarthBound to be the game hinted at with the “Wind your yoyos” comment. So we put those not-so-subtle hints in the third panel as though Reggie ALWAYS talked like he does at E3 (bad jokes and worse delivery). His whole speech there is based on his Mario Kart Wii speech at last year’s E3 when he strangely declared that “This is not your father’s Mario Kart.” Finally, Ray and I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for this one. Tune in to our next podcast (Monday) if you’d like to hear about what DIDN’T make it!

P.S. – Check out MetaRidleyR27’s BONUS COMIC!!!

Brilliant comic guys! I didn’t see the end coming! Definitely one of my favorites. A great follow up to the Captain Rainbow comic.

  2. Brawler08 says:

    I’d buy it.

  3. DrOswald says:

OK comic, but it didn’t really make me laugh. I guessed what the punchline was by panel 2. I did like all the earthbound references, though.

    Not bad, but not great.

I never heard Reggie’s Mario Kart speech. Come to think of it, I’ve never heard audio of him at all. It probably would be funnier if I had.

I did like MetaRidley’s 8-bit comic. Clever. If you get some experience making 8-bit sprites and work on the backgrounds a bit you could really have something going.

  4. dj75728 says:

Well that was awesome guys. NCG.

I always wanted to learn how to kill Rainbows! This game will be awesome!

  5. I was left speechless.

  6. steve-ohs says:

    Great Comic
I love how you made him Americanized, esecially with the spiked Yoyo, no-color clothes, and the mad look on his face.

  7. D3vin says:

Good comic… I liked how you made it sound like Earthbound and turned it into another C.Rainbow comic… I saw the ending coming just not in this way…

  8. roadjcat says:

I like how you bolded Earth and Bound. Random comment, but it’s true.

The reference to Mario Kart was also funny, but I wouldn’t say all the core fans are upset, just the majority. XD And plus I don’t think Reggie would actually admit that they failed to reach that so called “Hard Core” crowd. He still believes that Animal Crossing is for them. And while I love Animal Crossing, that is just one of the weirdest things I’ve ever heard.

Oh and is that guy in the left side of the crowd recording it or is he just taking pictures of everything?

I think the problem doesn’t lie with Nintendo as a company as a whole despite what some people say. I do believe the problem lies with Nintendo of America. Here is he issue as a whole. Nintendo is not lacking in core gamer games. NOA, despite localizing many, is simply not talking about them. Think about it…

When Battalion Wars 2 and Fire Emblem on Wii dropped, did you see marketing? I saw A commercial. When Metroid Prime 3 dropped, their commercial made Metroid look like a group experience. At E3, Nintendo showed Wario Shake, who’s animation is done by Production Studio IG. Nintendo showed Rhythmn Heaven which is one of the DS’s more interesting prospects this year. They just didn’t show it during their presser and a title like Rhythmn Heaven WILL need advertising. The games are there, it’s just NOA is pretending they aren’t. NOJ, however, knows how to appeal to both casual AND core gamers. They’re making the games for both and advertising the games for both.

As I said, the problem isn’t with Nintendo as a whole, but a SERIOUS misconception as to their consumer base in America. I mean, Iwata came forward and apologized about the affair. Cammy said we should play more Mario Kart and SSBB. Reggie said “How can you be mad? You have animal crossing.” That right there proves the point.

I’ve hated NoA for a long time. They’ve royally screwed up the Virtual Console, just like everything else they do. NoA is just terrible. They need a massive overhaul.

I loved the comic though BTW. Reggie is so much fun. ^_^

  11. tustin says:

I saw the end coming, but the “Rainbow Killer” twist was great and compleatly unexpected! GCG!! (That’s “great” instead of “nice”).

BTW, Great artwork, Ray. Tt seems that that job *hasn’t* cut the comic back as much as we thought it would. 🙂

  12. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Reggie looks so sad in the first panel. I wonder if he actually knows that their press conference sucked.

  13. sheppy says:

He’s more sad that his previous job pretty much dried up. The world has no more room for hamburglary.

  14. Anon says:

The light, in the fortress of Nintendo-tude…
    is it a Wii?

    Also, NCG!!
    You too Meta.
Imma try to make a Comic now.

    Off to the Comic Cave!

I WANT EARTH BOUND AND I WANT IT NOW!!!

Most people don’t retain knowledge that isn’t true. 😛

*is thoroughly convinced that the conference was actually pretty good*

  17. hydrocow says:

    great comic
that last panel reminded me a Bridget from guilty gear. He is dressed as a nun and uses yo-yos that he can turn into teddy-bears and buzz-saws.

  18. Diddgery says:

I knew from the start that you’d fake us out in the end 🙁 We’re never gonna get MOTHER3.

  19. steve-ohs says:

Wow, Anon I think you’re right. The light is a wii, thats hillarious! Good job seeing that Anon!!

  20. Swimming_Bird says:

Just so long as Nintendo doesn’t shut down the awesome fan translation that’s so near to completion, then I’ll be content.

  21. Kvb says:

Are you guys sure the Yoyo makes a re-appearance in Mother 3? Lucas seems more of a stick and Rope Snake kinda guy.

  22. Tim says:

    There is a yoyo.

  23. Thekeeyzar says:

you guys never stop amazing me. Always love a good earthbound reference.

  24. Ryan says:

Hey guys, Just wanted to say I’ve been following you since the beginning and never posted before.

This comic is absolutely dead-on. Nintendo has forgotten their core group and the pile of money their empire is built on has caused them to lose touch with reality…. well, at least with their fan base anyway.

Great comic and I can’t wait for your next one.

    -Ryan-

I am the counter example to these statements. And I don’t think anyone can convince me that Animal Crossing isn’t amazing.

  26. Tristan says:

    Im… not sure what to say to this comic…… its… kinda…. creepy…

    Captian Rainbow Killer?

    My reaction = WTF

Nice comic though, even if i am a bit weirded out 0_o

I think that’s the point. Everyone thinks it’s something from the Mother series, but it’s some weird spin-off of Captain Rainbow.

Oh and this has been bugging me. This is question is probably really stupid, but what are you guys standing on in the logo?

  28. Narnian says:

Love this comic! Anything that makes fun of Reggie’s use of emphasis is hilarious.

  29. dj75728 says:

I am the counter example to these statements. And I don’t think anyone can convince me that Animal Crossing isn’t amazing.

    Yeah, but you’re…..also weird.

And they are standing on the “B” from the word “Earthbound” on the game boxes. Took me a while to get it too.

    I take that as a compliment. 😛

As for the logo, ok, yes I see it now. Thanks. But it’ looks like a hill or something…I was wondering what a hill had to do with the comic…but why a B, why not an E or something, or why not the logo they use in brawl…?

  31. Ray says:

Short answer: It was really late and I was burnt out on the comic.

I tried my best to find a high-resolution Earthbound logo from Brawl, but with no luck.

    Works for me!

  33. Izaccthefrost says:

YESSSS!!!! I loved the comic. Definitely Top 10. Also Meta’s comic reminds me of a Black20 short which was Tetris the Movie.

The thing of it is, the games that are good are really really REALLY good… Everything else creates a gigantic vortex of suck to open up and remove small pieces of your soul for just having played it… and no, there is no mediocre.

The games are either coded by the hand of god (him/they/her)self, or the make ET for the Atari look like a viable alternative.

Aside from that, my comment about losing touch with their fanbase was more along the lines of Reggie’s lovely speeches and how they announce, in essence “we’re going to make the Wii do what it should have been able to do from day one out of the box… kind of… sort of… well, we’ll see how it goes”

Love the Wii and I absolutely applaud any new innovation in the world of gaming (the last major change was exchanging the joystick for a control pad iirc!) but Nintendo seems to have lost touch in my opinion… and that’s not to say that Microsoft or Sony are innocent in this regard, but this was a Nintendo comic/discussion.

Incidentally, I appreciate opposing viewpoints and reserve the right to be wrong and change my opinion.

  35. Baka says:

This was hilarious. I liked how I was expecting a joke about one thing, then it ending up completely different.

Also the dark lighting in the first panels look cool.

  36. dj75728 says:

I just noticed that on the first three panels it looks like a Wii is the source of light. That’s cool.

  37. roadjcat says:

Yeah, and that was pointed out about 23 comments ago. XD But I didn’t notice that either. I didn’t notice a lot of things in this comic. Lots of hidden details.

  38. Anon says:

    Wait…
What color is a rainbow’s blood?

  39. Jakob says:

You’re getting much better at drawing Ray.

    Good job. 🙂

I’m really disappointed with Nintendo right now.

  40. Lava says:

BAHAHA! That’s a great comic! Perfect accenting / pausing with Reggie’s speaking. No offense, but I haven’t really actually laughed laughed at your comics in a while, but this one is a true winner!

(Don’t get me wrong, they are still interesting in various ways, but this one is just so true, and right on the money with what’s going on in our Nintendo fanboy world.)

  41. RedVinnie777 says:

ive listend from the start and i love both the podcast and the comics, this one especially. nintendos conference stunk so badly that even sony’s beat it! please use this as a suggestion box!

  42. Tristan says:

    Wait…
What color is a rainbow’s blood?

Thats an… interesting question to come up with…

  43. Niki says:

    Wait…
What color is a rainbow’s blood?

Thats an… interesting question to come up with…

I bet it would be gray…devoid of colors, after all.

    Wait…
What color is a rainbow’s blood?

Thats an… interesting question to come up with…

I bet it would be gray…devoid of colors, after all.

I would think black or white. White is the presence of all colors and black is being devoid of all colors.

Why are we talking about what color blood a rainbow would have…?

  46. 7R011 says:

    that was just…..awful

    TCG [Terrible comic guys]

  47. Mashi says:

I heard recently that Reggie wasn’t releasing MOTHER3 because it offended him. “Implied transexuals”, he said.

    okay sure regina
