Tom Crook

TimHey, an Animal Crossing comic! I know at least one fan that’s going to be happy about it. What you don’t know is that we’re going to post the same comic next week and you’ll ask, “Hey, where’s the new comic?” And I’ll say, “Don’t you see? Ray added a speck of dust in panel 1 and adjusted the color saturation in panel 3! You liked last week’s comic, so we figured we’d play it safe and not change too much.” In this scenario, you’d never come back to 2P START! because you don’t like wasting your time. And to that I ask, why then are people buying Animal Crossing: City Folk? This game went from being speculated as Nintendo’s first MMO to being THE SAME GAME AGAIN! I know there are lots of Wii owners that are new to video games, but I’m really getting tired of Nintendo missing the mark for its core fanbase.

RayYou’re absolutely right, Tim. Some sequels can benefit from the “don’t fix it if it isn’t broken” rule, but Animal Crossing is not one of them. Since this is a game that doesn’t really end, anyone who has played Animal Crossing has likely played it to death on a daily basis. The only reason you would stop playing is if you either collected everything possible, or got simply got sick of playing it. It is for that very reason that Animal Crossing will never survive with minor changes. You grow to understand every inch of how the game works, how characters interact with each other, and you eventually wear off the fresh feeling of experiencing something for the first time. It’s been 6-7 years since the original was released, and a lot can happen in that span of time. Without fresh new experiences, Animal Crossing will become stale and old.

Ok, Tim’s blurb was funnier than the comic. Granted, I find AC bashing hilarious, so its okay. NCG!

  2. Kearns says:

So true. I really enjoyed Animal Crossing on GameCube. Still can’t figure out what about the DS version should make me want to play it through. My wife hadn’t played the GC version, so she finished (and destroyed) the DS version. But now why would we want the Wii version? Hmmm?

  3. Emrikol says:

I just can’t help but play the damned game šŸ™

The reason my Wii still sticks around is primarily lured by Sin, and it’s deserving of Punishment… 2, DAMN I LOST CLEVERNESS POINTS!

    But seriously, good comic.

Hey, not to sound like a Nintendo fanboy or anything, but I don’t quite get what people’s problem is with Animal Crossing. I mean, I think it’s a great game, and if you don’t think so, you don’t have to play it, instead of whining about it just to hear your own voice. And after all, it’s not like you have to pay off your debt to that slave-driver; it’s far from being the only thing you do in the game.
Okay, so I could go on forever about how you kind of people need to grow up, but instead I think I’ll just check that little “unsubscribe” box next to the 2P START!! feed in my Google Reader settings, and never come to this crappy webcomic again. Good day, sir.

Yeah!! This comic used to be good.

Is it just me or is this comment funnier than the comic? I was thoroughly amused.

See, I kinda want to do my own webcomic just because of comments like this. It would make my day. “Oh gee, I’ve offended someone and will likely get a good “talking to” on his livejournal. Depressed am I…”

  10. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Nice comic guys! And I found the blurb quite funny as well! I know a certain fan who’s going to be a little irratated though. *sigh*

  11. CKcheeseboy says:

Ugh. While I won’t go as far as eopijn, I am a little tired of the AC: CF bashing.

OK, so Nintendo makes one game that doesn’t have huge changes from the previous installment. So? There are still a decent amount of changes, one of which being the reintroduction of real holidays like Christmas and Halloween (instead of nothing but stuff like the Acorn Festival and Yay Day). There’s other new/improved stuff as well, but everybody expects it to be revolutionary. Sure, it could have been better (graphics, even more new stuff, etc.), but if the changes aren’t enough for you, don’t buy it.

City Folk certainly has more changes over the previous installment than any game in the Roster Update series–err, sorry, Madden–and yet every year millions of people buy them. If you have more than 2 Madden games, you have absolutely no right to criticize City Folk in my opinion. </rant>

Anyways, since that had nothing to do with the comic itself: decent comic; I like the artwork.

  12. steve-ohs says:

Like Tacos, I must admit I don’t find the comic that funny, but Tim’s little blurby thingy was good.

its a joke I’ve seen before, just like animal crossing

  13. Tim says:

    eopijn,
Sorry you feel that way. The comic itself isn’t meant as a bash on Animal Crossing, we just find it funny how Tom Nook makes you pay off the debt, and tied it to the current housing crisis our country faces. The blurb certainly is my point of view on the series, and is a bash on the lack of innovation on the series. I’m definitely not the only one that feels this way as the reviews are significantly lower than previous installments. Please do enjoy the game, it’s NOT a bad game, it’s just very disappointing that Nintendo seems to be putting in very little effort here.

  14. steve-ohs says:

random comment: The vote count says it has 3 votes with an average of 4.67 out of 5, and I already voted…but I didn’t think it was that funny and voted it a 2, which makes it mathimatically impossible to get a 4.67. Even if the other 2 put 5, that makes the average = 4.00
    soo..yeeaahh

  15. Tim says:

    steve-ohs,
You must have found it funnier than you thought you did, because apparently you gave it 4 stars.

  16. steve-ohs says:

really? hmm..whatever, i apparently can’t click the right star, well extra 2 stars rollover from beyond 5 star past comics.
    NCG…apparently

  17. Tim says:

yeah, not sure what happened, sorry.

  18. steve-ohs says:

its okay, i probably just messed up.

  19. MetaRidleyR27 says:

You know, at first I wondered what that red dot on Nook’s face was. It took me a bit to realize that it was a mouth. Nook’s never had a mouth in the games has he? Either way, it makes him look crazier about debt and such.

  20. dexdeldio says:

Its a pretty cool comic but I don’t agree with the blerbs.

  21. Dominator_101 says:

Nice comic! I felt that way when I started… You think there would at least be a contract for you to sign or something…

    Anyway, panel 3 for wallpaper?

  22. moonjuice7 says:

Panel 3 for wall paper seconded. And GCG! I loved it. I’ve never played any of the AC games, but from what I’ve seen, it does look pretty repetetive. Then again, the same could be said of Pokemon…

  23. roadjcat says:

Wow. I wonder who this “fan” everyone keeps referring to is. XD

I thoroughly enjoyed the comic, though I found the last three panels to be a bit unnecessary, as you don’t HAVE to upgrade your house. XD And what is the bee stung character holding? A weed? Oh and Tom Nook’s face in panel 3 deserves some kind of award. XD

I am NOT however very happy with the blurbs, but I’m tired of arguing about it. I’ve only had about 8 hours play time with the game, but I am very much enjoying it, despite having played the other two constantly. I can however see myself getting bored if they do this with the fifth installment. Yes, not fourth, fifth. I think I can stand subtle changes again, but not after that.

And I really am finding LOADS of stuff to do in this version, and the mushroom collecting is fun as well.

And has it really been two years since I got a Wii? It doesn’t seem like it’s been very long, and the reason I bought a Wii…well that came out 3 days ago…it won’t be long before I’m anticipating a brand new console, and I’m sure a completely new handheld could be approaching soon.

EDIT: Oh and good job. You’ve got an Animal Crossing comic down, now you need either an Ace Attorney, Trauma Center, Endless Ocean, Harvest Moon or Metroid (not guest) comic! XD

  24. roadjcat says:

Oh! I just thought of something. If it’s been six months, Nook’s Cranny has likely expanded. Why is Nook still wearing the apron!? It really hasn’t been 6 months, the character is just a wuss. XD

  25. MetaRidleyR27 says:

EDIT: Oh and good job. Youā€™ve got an Animal Crossing comic down, now you need either an Ace Attorney, Trauma Center, Endless Ocean, Harvest Moon or Metroid (not guest) comic! XD

They already did Metroid. Remember Samus vs Aiai?

  26. Awesome comic. I laughed for a ridiculously long time. If Nook was decked out in a suit as opposed to his apron in the 6-months later panel it would have been even better. But even as is, hilarious.

  27. Oh! I just thought of something. If itā€™s been six months, Nookā€™s Cranny has likely expanded. Why is Nook still wearing the apron!? It really hasnā€™t been 6 months, the character is just a wuss. XD

Augh, beat me by mere minutes. That’s what I get for answering the phone!!!

They already did Metroid. Remember Samus vs Aiai?

Ah correct, but does that honestly count? It was not a parody/spoof/whatever of Metroid, it just so happened that Samus was someone they could use for the joke.

EDIT: Oh! I just thought of something else. Is this making fun of City Folk or just Animal Crossing in general, because if it was City Folk, than the character shouldn’t be wearing that hat. Sorry, technicalities from a Animal Crossing fanboy.

EDIT2: Hey! The house in the first panel has already been expanded! Not only is it noticeably bigger, but it has an orange roof, which cannot be obtained until the first house expansion. Do your research next time! Sheesh! (Kidding of course)

  29. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Wait, what’s that yellow stain in the 5th panel? Is that… Animal Crossing blood?! And more importantly, why is it gone in the next panel?

  30. roadjcat says:

Sorry, more technicalities: Why is the grass in the first panel gray? The trees are noticeably green which means it’s Summer, which means the grass should also be green.

Also, shouldn’t the house be bigger 6 months later?

Okay, I’ll (try to) stop now.

Wait, whatā€™s that yellow stain in the 5th panel? Is thatā€¦ Animal Crossing blood?! And more importantly, why is it gone in the next panel?

It took me a while, but I think it’s like to show that the character hit the ground.

EDIT 5 billion: You know what? You SHOULD do this comic again next week, it is in dire need of editing. (KIDDING! šŸ™‚ )

  31. roadjcat says:

Okay, I’m just doing this as a joke now. I don’t really mean anything by it, but when the animals laugh they have the lines above their head, not “Ha Ha Ha!” At least I think so. I could be wrong…

Okay, I apparently failed in trying to stop pointing out minute flaws.

  32. Gadoink says:

really? hmm..whatever, i apparently canā€™t click the right star, well extra 2 stars rollover from beyond 5 star past comics.
    NCGā€¦apparently

you DID hit the second star! you just hit the second from the right, not the second from the left. duh!

  33. roadjcat says:

Did you guys just add the logo? Anyway, it’s pretty spiffy, but maybe the Tom Nook logo would’ve been more fitting?

  34. Haniko says:

    NCG, except you’re slightly off.
I’m still paying him off in Wild World.
Also, I love how the “ha ha ha”s look like they’re from the game. Great job on that.

  35. roadjcat says:

Also, I love how the ā€œha ha haā€s look like theyā€™re from the game. Great job on that.

I stand corrected I suppose. I dunno, do they actually have the words over their heads or are they just lines…maybe I’m thinking Harvest Moon. GAH! That’s going to bug me now.

  36. dexdeldio says:

Wait, whatā€™s that yellow stain in the 5th panel? Is thatā€¦ Animal Crossing blood?! And more importantly, why is it gone in the next panel?

Hmm, well it could be blood, maybe AC’s Human’s blood is yellow and highly volatile, TO THE MUSEUM

What do you mean theres no section on anatomy?!? What kind of lousy museum is this?

ooh and I like the logo

Oh! I just thought of something. If itā€™s been six months, Nookā€™s Cranny has likely expanded. Why is Nook still wearing the apron!? It really hasnā€™t been 6 months, the character is just a wuss. XD

He can’t buy anything from Nook because he’s still working for him.

EDIT2: Hey! The house in the first panel has already been expanded! Not only is it noticeably bigger, but it has an orange roof, which cannot be obtained until the first house expansion. Do your research next time! Sheesh! (Kidding of course)

What about the paint buckets? I don’t know if they don’t appear until a certain Nook upgrade, though. And I could be making this up, but in WW, doesn’t the original color match your DS color? Meaning it could be possible if the DS color was orange.

Sorry, more technicalities: Why is the grass in the first panel gray? The trees are noticeably green which means itā€™s Summer, which means the grass should also be green.

Maybe it’s pavement. I don’t know about CF, but AC and WW both have pavement in front of the house.

Also, shouldnā€™t the house be bigger 6 months later?

As said above, not if he hasn’t finished working for Nook.

Also: I didn’t have any problems figuring out the “hit the ground” thingy. And I like the logo.

EDIT: Oh, and how does the rating determine if you have voted already or not? When I get home from school, it always seems to be already rated, which my guess is because my brother probably voted already (from a different computer, though). Otherwise it just doesn’t like my computer.

And normally I would agree with the Panel 3 wallpaper, but I just changed it to “Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective” so I’ll be keeping that for a while.

    </post as long as roadjcat’s Podcast posts>

Paint comes with Nookingtons. And if this was referring to Wild World, then the character wouldn’t have a hat.

Maybe itā€™s pavement. I donā€™t know about CF, but AC and WW both have pavement in front of the house.

Why does it have the squares and such like the grass then? And why does it extend all the way to the trees in the background?

  42. boredpoo says:

Paint comes with Nookingtons. And if this was referring to Wild World, then the character wouldnā€™t have a hat.

Can’t you choose to give him a hat, though? Although that would mean he designed it already, which he couldn’t do before coming to town.

Why does it have the squares and such like the grass then? And why does it extend all the way to the trees in the background?

For the trees, it could be a perspective thing. Or they paved the town and put up a parking lot (oooo bop bop bop).

  44. lwelyk says:

Pretty good comic, and roadj, no ones saying it’s a bad game. It’s still fun. It’s just pretty much the same. There aren’t enough new things to justify $50 if you’ve already bought the previous two. I am enjoying it, but I wouldn’t have paid for it, and it needs to change things up next time or it will no longer be a good series.

  45. Apemasta' says:

I quite literally slapped my knee at “bellout.”
Excellent work, guys. I’m particularly fond of that 3rd panel, Ray.

Current events have made me into a politics junky, so you can bet I appreciate some good, corny political humor. That being said, I was under the impression that President-elect Harding was against giving more money to fat cats like the Nook Corporation… You’ll be hearing from me in four years, Tim.

P.S. I’ve gotta give my props to this weeks icon, as well. Countless hours of Brawling on Smashville are giving me the itch to pop that thing.

  46. FluffyPanda says:

Loving panel three. But the blurb just makes me want to burn down orphanages!!!!!

Errr… actually it’s a very valid opinion that somebody has posted on their own website that I CHOSE TO VISIT (that and I still owe Tim a bajiliion pageviews…)

NCABATCG (nice comic and bit after the comic guys)

  47. roadjcat says:

Canā€™t you choose to give him a hat, though? Although that would mean he designed it already, which he couldnā€™t do before coming to town.

Only if you designed it. And since those outfits are clearly in the game from the start (the diamond shirt, the work uniform) you can’t use them as a hat.

For the trees, it could be a perspective thing. Or they paved the town and put up a parking lot (oooo bop bop bop).

That still doesn’t explain why it has the same pattern as the grass and why it suddenly gets lighter in the last few panels.

roadj, no ones saying itā€™s a bad game. Itā€™s still fun. Itā€™s just pretty much the same. There arenā€™t enough new things to justify $50 if youā€™ve already bought the previous two. I wouldn’t say that with complete certainty. There are tons of people that have all three. I’m not the only one you know. And I don’t recall saying that people think it’s a bad game…

Great, first you take over someone else’s podcast and now you comment on someone else’s comic… Get yer own!!

Just kidding, I still think you need to cameo in a comic. You already cameo in so many podcasts, why not go for a complete set?

  52. PkmnTrainerJ says:

Though I have played Wild World pretty much to death since buying it during UK release week, (I have one bug to get that only appears in July/August and then I’m done) I will undoubtedly purchase this game too.

I’m such a sucker for Nintendo franchises. You could liken it with a certain person’s affection for all things Sonic.

  53. Dominator_101 says:

Nice logo! I thought it would be a Gyroid with you guys as eyes, but I like that one too.

And while whether its the right color or not is still being debated, I like the way you made the ground look. It looks exactly like in the game!

  57. roadjcat says:

Oh, and I have reached a conclusion.

The Ha Ha Ha’s are only from the original Animal Crossing. The lines are used in Wild World and City Folk. So I stand somewhat corrected. HOWEVER! The large house and white grass have yet to be accounted for! šŸ™‚

I don’t recall there being gravel, but sure, whatever, let’s go with that.
And I know you’re trying to make a point, but that Galaxy comic was not about the gameplay in Galaxy, it was not set in the Mario universe, it was set in the real world…sort of. This comic is clearly set in the Animal Crossing universe.

Okay, I’ll stop being a technical jerk now. šŸ˜€

Funny, I did the actual super secret level where you get star #121, and I didn’t see him there. Or was it actually #122?

That was one of the most epic paragraphs I’ve read in a while. šŸ™‚

  65. Shancad says:

Hehe. topical humor suits you well. i can’t say that for most.

  68. Pstar says:

Ahhh, really? … thank god i didn’t buy it! I was looking forward to new things in animal crossing, but if what u say is true then it’s going to happen what you just said “it’s going to grow stale and old very fast.
