Let’s Try This Again…

TimHad problems with the last post (and subsequent comments), so I deleted it entirely. The site now supports threaded comments. There are other minor changes (like smaller Gravatars), so sound off! If you don’t like something, I’m happy to change it!

So what was fixed from the last time exactly?

  2. Tacos says:

For a while, everything on the site was pushed to the left and was done in ‘crude’ HTML looks (not sure how to better explain it), but now its back to normal. I’m assuming that was the problem that was fixed.

  3. CKcheeseboy says:

Like I mentioned in the previous post, the smaller gravatars aren’t that big a deal, but it would be nice to have consistency with the size between the main site and the forums. Of course, for most people’s gravatar’s besides mine that’s not a big deal, so I don’t know if it’s worth fixing if I’m the only person who particularly cares about that.

Also, the preview removing a reply/reply emptying the text box issue still seems to be here. You probably know that, and I know it might not be an easy fix, I’m just reposting it so it’s still here somewhere.

  4. tustin2121 says:

Hey! It looks different now! The comments blocks are see through and the names don’t take up the side of a comment anymore! Awesome!

AND CKcheeseboy’s Avatar actually WORKS now! Awesome! 😀

Hm… so we seem to be scrapping the “Author Comment” thing then. Oh well. 😛

  5. CKcheeseboy says:

    this is a test:

I’m sorry in advanced if this breaks something, but this is a reply to a previewed comment which, obviously, does not actually exist.

    • CKcheeseboy says:

OK, so obviously it figures it out and doesn’t appear to cause any issues. That’s good.

And yeah, tustin, I fixed it a little while back…for some reason, even though .png can handle transparency, gravatar wasn’t keeping it when I uploaded pngs. Uploading it as a .gif with transparency, though, worked for whatever reason.

Plus this is a brand new one anyway since the old 80×80 one got squished and didn’t match the background.

  6. roadjcat says:

I don’t see a difference. Now I feel stupid. XD

  7. tustin2121 says:

Um… It says that there are 7 comments, when there are only 6 plus CKcheeseboy’s funky quote thingy…

    Just saying. 🙂

    • CKcheeseboy says:

That’s the “threaded comments” thing Tim is talking about. It still counts as a comment, but now replys appear next to the comment they are replying to and not at the bottom (like this).

  8. Kyzin says:

So he just broke it a little. Still, much worse things could have happened, so this isn’t that bad.

  9. Tim says:

Ok, changed the gravatar back to 80×80. Do we like that better? (I know CK, you’ll have to change yours back, sorry).

  10. Tim says:

You’re right that DJ’s comments aren’t showing up as Premium. I’m guessing he’s not logged in when he comments.

  11. MetaRidleyR27 says:

The yellow’s nice, but it’s a little hard to see up against the white background. I hate to seem demanding, but maybe making the yellow a bit darker would be more relaxing on the eyes?

    • roadjcat says:

That’s why I say we scrap the whole green vs. yellow thing and make it purple in honor of Rouge! Okay, I’m obviously not serious, but that was the exact reason I liked green better, because it was darker.

  12. roadjcat says:

Orange wins. It’s dark and it matches my avatar. haha

  14. steve-ohs says:

ooh, the comments are so colorful now.

  15. RedVinnie says:

    testing……

  16. Tacos says:

    Oooooh, a pretty star!

  17. roadjcat says:

🙁 I liked the pretty colors.

  18. CKcheeseboy says:

Also, as I made that last post, I got a 500 Internal Server Error…it’s back! 🙁

  19. Ray says:

This is a test of the emergency commenting system.

  20. tustin2121 says:

Hey, that’s what I say all the time! 🙂

This is a test of the Emergency [X] System, this is only a test. If this were real, I would be screaming right now. 😀 I much prefer it over the funky non word “laporium” or whatever thing.

Also, I seemed to have missed the comment rainbow period. Were the comment backgrounds colored, the outlines, or just the stars I see now?

    • tustin2121 says:

Now that’s interesting. When I previewed my comment, it was in Ray’s box, but when I submitted it, it appeared under Ray’s box…

  21. tustin2121 says:

This comment is a reply to my nested comment inside my “emergency broadcast system” comment. This comment is previewed, while the comment I’m replying to was not.

(When I preview it, the titled above the comment box (which once said “Reply to Tustin2121” now say “Comment” in the preview page. This must be the problem – it’s losing the reply-to metadata when it previews.

    • CKcheeseboy says:

Yeah, that’s a known issue. The more serious one is if you then go “oh, it’s not replying to that comment any more, I’ll click it again”, it empties the reply box so you lose whatever you typed.

      • tustin2121 says:

If that happens, you should be able to click the back button, because the preview page’s POST data remembers what you typed, even though the reply to’s POST data may not. So you click back, copy the text, paste it in the next one, and click Post.

Actually, this clearing the comment thing is NOT as serious as the preview not remembering the reply to data, because the clearing the comment problem wouldn’t happen if the preview field remembered where it was posting to!

      • CKcheeseboy says:

True, but what if you type something in and then decide you want it as a reply to somebody? It would still erase everything even without the separate Preview issue. So it’s more serious because you can trigger it under multiple circumstances. 😛

Also, in that case, you wouldn’t even have the Preview page to go back to. I don’t know enough about web programming to know if going back to the non-preview page would keep it, but I seem to remember at least once where I clicked back for whatever reason (possibly forgetting to put my login info in), and my post was gone.

  22. tustin2121 says:

Also, Tim, at least for me (Firefox 3.0), it looks like your site has turned into one of those annoying sites that never finishes loading… That spinner just keeps spinning. Firebug (hey, I’m a web developer, what can I say?) tells me that everything has loaded already, but that spinner just won’t quit!

Of course, while writing this comment, the loading FINALLY stopped… the timeout must have run out.

  23. DrOswald says:

    Ok, A few questions:

    1. Are the comment borders supposed to be some color besides Ray’s and Tim’s? I am seeing a lot of comments about green and yellow, but no green or yellow.

    2. The text size and font of the site all changed. was that supposed to happen, or is my browser just doing funky things?

  24. FluffyPanda says:

Got to get in on this new commenting action

    • FluffyPanda says:

And here we have nested pandas!

      • FluffyPanda says:

Cool, I get a little gold star if I log in. Reminds me of the warm fuzzy feeling you get at primary school when the teacher slaps a gold star on a piece of homework 🙂

  25. Kvb says:

Something’s not quite right about the threaded comments, but I can’t put my finger on it. I think maybe it would help if the borders were a little softer in color.

It’s good to see the site improving, though. Now all we need is the edit feature back!

What are those stars for, by the way?
Judging by FluffyPanda’s post, it marks people who posted while logged in. (I don’t like logging in, because the “remember me” option doesn’t work for me.)
But what’s the point of being able to distinguish logged in users from others?

    • MetaRidleyR27 says:

The star identifies “Premium” Members. Those are people who have been here for a while, posted regularly, and/or just shown dedication to the site in general.

      • Kvb says:

Oh. That. I was hoping that wouldn’t actually happen when they first spoke of it, because of how objective and unfair that is.

    • Kvb says:

Trying me some replyin’. And logging in.
I kinda wonder when the site will forget me again. I never clocked it.

    • Tim says:

Ok, I’ve changed it so that regardless of whether you were logged in, the star shows if you’re a premium member (which you now are Kvb).

  26. RedVinnie says:

    yay! im a premium member!

    • FluffyPanda says:

I wouldn’t get too excited… look up at the thread 😉

There may as well be no star for premium members but a little (empty) grave for non premiums!

  27. Daecious says:

I like the colors Tim. the thing is, Ray is my favorite between the two of you. but then this commenting came along. Tim’s blue color makes him nice to talk to while Ray’s red makes me feel as though he is enraged. Tim just might steal a Ray fan.

  28. nintendogamer101 says:

    Testing . . . testing . . . 1, 2, 3 . . . testing.

  29. Kyzin says:

Aw. I don’t like not being a premium member, not one bit. Though I am more active on the forums than comments I’ve put on the comics…I wish I had something more clever to say for them.

  30. Kyzin says:

Complaining aside, it seems as if the mods should get some kind of recognition. A ‘mod’ badge instead of a star, for instance. Though I’m not sure you can do that without adding a new kind of premium members. Super deluxe premium members, maybe?

  31. moonjuice7 says:

    Spiffy new look guys.
