Hey guys loving the podcasts, I recently listened to podcast 1-50 while leveling some characters on wow.. don’t know why but its been good to have the podcasts constantly going so i don’t go crazy while grinding with my mage haha. Anyways can’t wait to get threw the other 40 so i can listen to this one 🙂 also Ray when you did that mash-up of Tim talking racist.. that was the best thing I’ve heard.

  2. CKcheeseboy says:

Agreed: Marmaduke is terrible. Garfield used to be alright, but now is pretty bad. The only thing that saves it is Garfield Minus Garfield. Dilbert and Bizarro are good, and a few others are alright, but yeah, most newspaper comics stink.

Also, the video games sound effect issue is one of my pet peeves as well. I do have to give credit, though, to Big Bang Theory. It’s the one show I can think of that has actually used legit video game sound effects–and from the specific games they were supposedly playing! In one episode, somebody is playing Mario 64, and they used the actual pause sound from that, and in an episode where they’re playing Rock Band you can hear the sound that plays when you get a star. So my hat is off to them for being a show that actually gets it right. Is there a White Doom award for that or something? A Mario Award? (and no, roadjcat, it wouldn’t be called the Rouge Award :P)

Another note on the computer issue is how some shows make things much flashier than they really would be. One example that comes to mind is on CSI, whenever they scan a fingerprint you see hundreds of images flash by while it’s scanning, where in reality that would be a terrible waste and would only make the search take longer. Programs in real life are actually pretty boring and not usually very exciting to watch.

    • roadjcat says:

Why can’t it be called the Rouge Award!? If it’s Black Doom after the WORST Sonic character, it only make sense to name the opposite award after the BEST Sonic character. 😀

      • roadjcat says:

Oh yeah and speaking of sound effects, there was an SNL skit where they were supposed to be playing Wario Land: Shake It! and they actually were. I was impressed. Though later in the skit I don’t think they actually were.

  3. SuperPaperBoy says:

Hey Sonic! Press A to check out an idea for Link’s panel in ‘Purely Subtle’!

Sorry for lurking behind the shadows, and not leaving a single comment. (How dare I!) But now I’m rising from my grave. I’ve tried to sign up, but didn’t recieve an email. (Are you guys denying me because I use hotmail?) I’ve been listening and reading for several months, and I love your takes on some of the classic, and newer aspects of gaming. Now please excuse me, I have to break out in a spontaneus, chorographed dance number.

  4. roadjcat says:

Again, not a whole lot to say and I enjoyed the podcast, but there sure was a lot of stuff not related to 2P START! or video games…XD

Though yes, I also agree, I feel stupid every time I even mention Twitter out loud. 😀

Oh and Tim, On reflection, Up wasn’t that great. I didn’t dislike like you did, but I think you’re points are valid and although it had some great characters, the overall story wasn’t that engaging, I like enjoyed The Proposal more than I did Up.

And I’m always like half expecting one of you to mention Rouge as the worst Sonic character just to annoy me. haha

Oh and Ray, I knew you were going to pick that Musical Misfit. 😛

  5. D3vin says:

I don’t think Lily is the end of 2P START!… She is the future,

    *2P START! the next Generation*
    Starring Lily and Ray’s son/daughter

I agree on your views on the Newspaper Comic Strips. I like Garfield occasionally, but it is a formula:
    Panel 1: setup
    Panel 2: Joke
    Panel 3:Punchline

It depends on how the first two panels are executed.

The callers this week sounded like Q*bert’s voice…

You lie! There is no M4A version!!! 🙁

A new album? Miley and the Orange Sunrise, Perhaps?
12-year-olds will devour anything, like the food references in Unleashed.
I aggree with you Tim. They use old Atari-effects too much.

…AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!!!
    *G.I. JOE!!!!*

      Yes-
      2pStart GX!

      Ray will have a child
      lets see
Ray- Son- Sun- Solar- Sola- Sol- Sol Emeralds- Blaze- Cat- Kat- Kenny the Shark- Kenny!
Ray’s son will be named Kenny.
By the time Kenny is however old Tim was when the comic started he will have become a fanboy of a series designed for the enjoyment of 12 year olds.
There he will hold a video competition for an alternate opening video for a game of said series. (referencing Ray’s BDA of Brawl’s opening and how Tim and Ray met when Ray entered a contest to make an alternate box art)
Lily, who was raised in Tim’s home has a great understanding of both video games and video creating will enter and win said contest.
The two will then contact and bond via e-mail and end up creating a Video game based Video Comic.

  6. Kvb says:

No M4A!? Aw man! I’ve grown fond of those..
Should’ve called this episode Blind Edition or something.

    @Ray’s Black Doom
What’s this about age-specific quality? Whatever happened to global appeal? Games like Super Mario Galaxy can be enjoyed by people of ALL ages!

  7. blaster says:

    Nice Podcast.
I didn’t know any brand shown in the last comic… but I do know it’s advertising, so it’s alright.
I sometimes really like reading Garfield… No, I can’t get New York Times or sort. I read it on that desktop comic thingy.
Ray’s Blackdoom is really terrifying… They decide to make things only an 8-year-old like? LAMERS!

No, I am next to never watch movie. I’d really like to watch some Star Wars though. For I am enjoy playing Lego Star Wars now.(duh)

  8. Mikallein says:

Great Podcast guy’s, i think that it was well worth the wait.

  9. Tacos says:

I’m pretty sure that my new phone won’t be able to use Twitter easily so I don’t get sucked in. It’s worked so far. I have one, but I really don’t use it all that often. It just sits there.

And I definitely understand why that first panel took a while. Black and white take so much effort to make it look good. Especially with text.

Marmaduke is hysterically bad. And I usually read the comics (when I have a newspaper… I don’t get one at the moment), but its just because it takes time. The only real comic strips I enjoy are Far Side (because its ingenious) and Calvin and Hobbes because its funny and actually somewhat philosophical (at least in some points). But I have a way to make Garfield funny: http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/

And do your calls earlier in the day!!!! 9 hour time difference and I don’t want to be up at 5am or anything. I’m human too.

And ‘Up’ was a great movie. Not Pixar’s best, but its Pixar, so its still good. Anyway, I was literally crying in the first twenty minutes because it was incredibly sad which blew me away.

Damn it, a German totally takes away my excuse.

    Eagle Eye was absolutely awful.

And I like the preview thingymabob

  10. roadjcat says:

I have a few comments on Musical Misfits and I’d like to know if I’m the only one that thinks this. If I am, well then I guess just ignore me. 😀 Now, I really shouldn’t have been able to listen to all of the suggestions from last week and be able to guess (correctly, I might add) that the song from Killer 7 would be chosen. Is it just me or are like a good chunk of the selected Musical Misfits upbeat techno-ish music? Does anyone else see a very distinct lack of variety here? I mean most of the songs are very good upbeat techno-ish music, but after 33 podcasts, it’s starting to get a bit old in my opinion.

Why is it that while I’m listening to music on YouTube to pick a song I want to suggest for that week, I reject songs while thinking to myself, “Ray won’t pick that.”? I wasn’t aware there were various definitions for “great video game songs”. I understand that upbeat songs are more fun to listen to, but that doesn’t really mean they’re better. Why haven’t we had any atmospheric, slow songs (if we have, please show it to me and regard me as an idiot with reference to that last statement)? Why when I decide to suggest some Metroid Prime or Ace Attorney music do I have to skip over things like the Reminisce themes and other slow songs?

I listen to a lot of video game music, and I love a lot of upbeat techno songs. Miror B Battle is the second most played song on my iTunes library. But out of all of the songs I’ve heard, Phendrana Drifts is still my favorite because it’s just amazingly atmospheric and peaceful and conveys the icy feeling perfectly. Do I really have that much of a disconnect, with good songs, that my favorite song of all time isn’t even good enough for a Musical Misfit, or are there some unspoken rules about Musical Misfits that I’m not aware of?

And I think that’s another issue: What are the requirements for a Musical Misfit? We’ve never been given a straight answer. How “lost in the shuffle” does the song have to be? Are suggestions not being chosen because they are too recent/popular or because Ray doesn’t like them?

So in conclusion, I’d just like to say that up tempo songs are spiffy, and I really enjoy the Musical Misfits section of the podcast, but we just need a little more variety with songs like these:

    • DrOswald says:

I think the key here is that Ray picks what he likes.

I don’t know what you are including in the category of up beat techno, but I don’t think any of the following musical misfits fit in there:

Lorenzen’s Soil, Ending Theme (Life Force), Banished: Spirit of the Night, Paper Mario – Final Battle (up beat, but hardly techno), Illusion of Gaia: In the Earthen Womb, Theme: The Crystal Stars – Paper Mario TTYD, Wii Fit Credits, and I am sure there are a few more.

Also, I don’t think Phendrana Drifts is that great of a song. Don’t get me wrong; it is good, but nothing special. I would be disappointed if that song was chosen for musical misfits. I can say that of 4 of the 5 songs you posted there (the exception being the one from Metroid Prime 2. essentially a remix of the Maridia theme, one of my all time favorites.) What it comes down to is preference, and Ray might not like the same songs you like. In the end, Ray will choose what he likes, and what he thinks more people will enjoy.

      • roadjcat says:

Well thank you for directing me towards those chosen songs. I didn’t honestly think that ALL the songs were upbeat techno, just there were so many that it kinda felt like it.

As for the slow songs…the question is, why would you be upset if such a song was chosen for Musical Misfits? Because they actually are not as good as other more upbeat ones, or because they aren’t as enjoyable to listen to when not actually playing the game? I mean, I know I’m not the only one who really likes Phendrana Drifts….soo…yeah.

And this has nothing to do with the whole Musical Misfits things, but that song from Metroid Prime 2 is actually a remix of Red Soil, a song that plays in Brinstar.

      • roadjcat says:

Actually, after listening to the songs you gave me…I guess I’m just kinda miffed that I haven’t been able to find a piece of music from Metroid Prime or Ace Attorney that Ray likes.

      • DrOswald says:

I suspect 2 reasons why I don’t like your suggestions as much as you do.

The first reason I don’t like many of the songs you put up is simply a matter of personal preference. Most of my favorite video game songs are more melodic and musical, but I don’t really like, on the first listen, most of those songs. People tend to disagree what makes good melodic music while upbeat types of music tends to appeal to a wider crowd because it is fun to listen to. This is the essential reason why Rock is more popular than Classical music. (PS: I am using “upbeat” and “melodic” as general terms here. Don’t read too much into the exact verbiage)

Second, I have never heard 3 of the 5 songs in context. Music is almost always better when you know the context of the piece. The Mouldou is a great song, but if you didn’t know the story behind the song it would not be half as enjoyable.

I can understand your frustration. It is very annoying when you have something you really like and want to share but no one else seems to care.

Also, I should make it clear that I don’t expect to be happy with every Musical Misfit. I am actually surprised I have liked as many as I have. When I said I would be disappointed, I do not mean that Ray messed up or that it is a bad song. I just wouldn’t care much for the musical misfit that week.

    • roadjcat says:

I think your second reason is why there are so many upbeat songs. They’re easier to enjoy out of context, but I’d still like a few more that aren’t upbeat. While not all of the Musical Misfits are “upbeat techno” are there any that are “sad”? That’s the best way I can think of describing it. “Sad” songs are generally very well done, so I’d like to see some of those as well. I think one of the ones you pointed out earlier was one, though.

      • MetaRidleyR27 says:

I seriously doubt that Ray is intentionally avoiding “sad” music. It’s probably just that he either hasn’t seen one that he feels is worth using, or he prefers other music submitted over it.

      • roadjcat says:

I didn’t say he was intentionally avoiding them. I just said I’d like to see some more.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How dare you not have an m4a version of the podcast!! I hate you I hate you I….

ooooooooo…. pretty comment preview updates as I type making me completely forget about the podcast not having an m4a version…. wait… NO M4A VERSION!!! What will my iTunes do?! I hate you I hate you!! 😛 >.< 🙂

  12. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Nice Podcast Guys! There was a lot of funny material this week, even though it was often unrelated to games or the comic. I’m also really looking forward to the new album!

  13. Supersonic24 says:

Wow. Ray, you really are good at editing. You turned my crap call into a halfway decent call! Btw, what did I say at the end? Also, great podcast! Definitely worth the extra wait!

  14. BadnikHunter says:

Nice podcast guys, really enjoyed it. The calls were kind of hard to understand though. And Tim, what you have to understand when watching movies is that they aren’t always gonna make sense. Now some movies might, but if you’re going into something like Pixar, then don’t expect everything to make sense.

  15. MetaRidleyR27 says:

As a matter of fact, I’ve got a couple of Musical Misfit suggestions for when the next user pick rolls around.

First is the Theme of Sagat from Street Fighter 4. This can only be heard in a single fight between Ryu and Sagat in the Arcade, which makes this song a rare treat.

Second is Baladium’s Dive from Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, as well as the Wii remake. It’s pretty short, but still a great song for a very creative boss battle.

  16. Tim says:

Sorry about the lack of m4a guys. For some reason it came out REALLLY quiet and it wouldn’t have been fun to listen to it that way. But to make up for it, we have a new comment preview live now (look below the comment you type) and a new badge for Premium Members. What do you think?

    • roadjcat says:

So…we’re pros now? haha Okay then. I like it better than the star, but I’m not quite sure why it says “pro”. XD Why not Premium or some abbreviation of that?

      • CKcheeseboy says:

Meh, it’s alright, but I still think something video game related (like a Smash Ball) would be cooler.

The alt text still seems to be “star”, though.

And the new comment preview thing is pretty cool.

      • roadjcat says:

Agreed in terms of how a Smash Ball would’ve been awesome.

      • D3vin says:

Either that or a “Knubby” award

      • DrOswald says:

Yes, but that would be hard to draw in such a small space. I am personally partial to the smash ball, a super mushroom, or a star man. but the “pro” image works well too. I like being called a “Pro 2P Starter” more than a “Premium 2P Starter.”

      • roadjcat says:

Although the people that would get it would be smaller than say, a smash ball, I really liked the idea of an actual badge from a game, like from Ace Attorney or Paper Mario. I think that’d be clever. To be quite honest, I’m actually a bit surprised we didn’t end up with the Smash Ball.

  17. Nice podcast. Been a while since I’ve visited the page, other than to view the comment. I like all the changes, and all the archives. And I like the live preview. Good times :3

  18. randomperson says:

For musical misfits you should do frogs theme from Chrono trigger

    heres a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5FFDj7vH6E

  19. Spectre100 says:

Agreed with Samus + Network would have been better for last frame. Whole version network crew could have been the guy in front and all the nintendo characters behind him…

    so much possibility…

  20. Kilburn says:

Wow. Surprised my MM got picked… My laptop’s battery ate it, so I’m unable to listen to the podcast. Can someone tell me who the fake grave riser was? And can a Zune download a podcast through it’s wi-fi?

  21. Wyrm says:

Yay, I can be mentioned in other podcasts ^^.

  22. Mkava says:

I have 38 comments? >.> Um, whoops. Glad I sound familiar though. xD Tim probably remembers me from Mario Kart Wii and my comment shortly after related to recognizing his Mii whilst playing. And my general harassing about joining my IRC network. >.> Glad I can make an impression either way. =D

Anywho, great podcast and comic this week. =)

  23. DrOswald says:

    Quick question to Ray:
Do Musical misfits have to be the original version of the song? the reason I ask is because I know of several really great video game songs that have orchestral versions that are even better. I would rather submit the orchestra version of these songs than the in game version.

  24. Finally listened to the podcast and I only have one thing to say:

Nobody liked the movie Batman & Robin. Ever.

  25. doc a doc says:

See the problem with having 8 and 9 year olds test Sonic games that are different from normal sonic games dosen’t work because these kids have never played a real sonic game! So it isn’t going to work because then it won’t appeal to the Sonic audience. Anyways what I’d like to see in a sonic game is a remake of old games such Sonic1, 2, 3 and knuckles, and CD, in 2.5 D with cutscenes. But I’m ranting, great podcast guys.

  26. 64Cheese says:

You mentioned “holding the controller upside down” when you were talking about poor movie choices, but I’d like to mention that my friend used to hold an SNES controller upside down while playing, and he still did really well. My other friends and I were amazed watching.

  27. DrOswald says:

Ok, time for some musical misfit suggestions.

The Starlight’s Flower – Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Dixie Beat – Donkey Kong Country 3

Theme of the Tantalus – Final Fantasy IX

Don’t Be Afraid – Final Fantasy VIII – Orchestral version here, which is a much better version.

  28. wordnerd says:

i love your comics, i always am looking at them every week but most of the time you get off the topic in your podcast, and it kind of makes me want to not listen to them every week.

  29. moonjuice7 says:

Another excellent podcast guys. Much appreciated.

  30. TheNinjaMouse says:

Hi guys! I decided now is as good a time as any to RISE FROM MY GRAVE. I first discovered your webcomic about a year ago when Ryan Estrada did a guest comic as part of his attempted 100 webcomics in a day stunt. I’ve been a faithful reader since then because I love your quirky, generally clean style of humor. For a long time, though, I only had Internet access at work, so I just started listening to the podcasts a few weeks ago and have really been enjoying them.

With that, I have a suggestion and a question. My suggestion is this: I think your podcast needs a new segment to counter the Black Doom Award–a segment highlighting something positive in the gaming world. Listening to consecutive podcasts & BDAs, you get the sense that the entire gaming industry is going to pot, and I don’t think that’s really the case. I think the good decisions deserve some recognition as much as the awful ones.

And finally, my question: It’s been well-established that Ray is obsessed with Sonic and Brawl, but what are Tim’s favorite games? Maybe I just haven’t gone back far enough in the podcasts to find out, but I’d like to know what games or genres Tim counts as his favorites. Anyway, thanks guys for all your hard work!!!
