How to Train Your Dragon

Ray I figured I would go with something a little stylistically different this time around. We’ll have to see how Tim feels about the look. Oh, and did I mention we did a guest strip for Brawl in the Family this week?

.

TimDespite the hatred controversy with this week’s comic, I made time to whip up a Tim’s Take with Yoshi. Enjoy the bonus content. It doesn’t cost a penny more than the regular subscription fee you pay us to read the normal comics. Oh wait…

Update: We’ve updated the comic to please the masses. Of course now there will be an equally angry populace shouting ‘How dare you!’ for changing things, but you can still see the original here. Honestly, we felt the new last panel worked better for a number of reasons, so thanks for all the feedback everyone!

……..
Why are you guys making fun of an old game?

• TheLupineOne says:

Because it’s a classic joke that never gets old.

• Myuu says:

I didn’t find it that funny. Yes, I know Yoshi wasn’t in SMG, but I still don’t think this is very funny. Besides, even if you wanted him in SMG bad enough that such a joke would resonate with you, the sting kind of goes away with the knowledge that he’ll be in the sequel anyway.

• FluffyPanda says:

How dare they?

I demand that all humour be topical, damnit!

It’s a slippery slope, next thing you know they’ll be making fun of Mario or Star Fox or Megaman or Duck Hunt

And all of those are just too old to be funny. Right?

• Kvb says:

That excuse doesn’t fly, Fluffy. Those jokes all relate to franchises, not specific games.
Duck Hunt may be considered the exception here (even though it did have more than one release), but because it came with the NES, and because of the laughing dog’s infamy, Duck Hunt joins ranks of treasured retro memories alongside the big franchises you named.

Super Mario Galaxy, on the other hand, is in a very awkward period right now. It’s far too old to be topical, but still too new to be nostalgic.

The fact that Super Mario Galaxy 2 does feature Yoshi also really weakened the punchline.
SMG2’s trailers focus so heavily on Yoshi that it’s hard to think back to the first game when the topic of Yoshi is presented to me.

That said, I actually did really like the joke. Today was just not the right time to tell it.
If this comic had been made when Super Mario Galaxy was still fresh in our minds, and Yoshi had not been announced for the second game yet, this comic would’ve been an instant classic.

• FluffyPanda says:

The Yoshi jokes in this strip also relate to a series (I refuse to call a series of videogames a “franchise”). The final panel that everybody seems to be complaining about is another Yoshi joke, not just a SMG joke.

So what’s the problem?

FluffyPanda says: “SUCCESS!”

• Kvb says:

It doesn’t matter that half of the joke isn’t Mario Galaxy related, because the other half is. You can’t laugh at only half of a joke.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I do like this comic. I’m not like Tim, hating entire comics because of a few flaws, not being able to appreciate the good parts within it.
No, instead I’m more like Ray. Giving these comics scathing 9.7 reviews.

• Myuu says:

This is the first time I’ve seen a (slightly) angry argument on this site. I’m afraid I agree with Kvb here, though it’s not that important; It’s just one comic, and I’m sure next week will be better.

• Theteddyt says:

I am rising from my Grave… I’ve been reading ever since the Birdo and Qwbert comic. I have been reading and listing religiously. I look forward every single week on your work. I seriously think you guys deserve 1,000,001 dollars. Keep up the work. I’m so loyal to your entertaining work. Seriously.

2. Talduras says:

Uh…………………

The closest thing I can think of to a joke in this one is that the last panel either refers to the fact that Yoshi is not in Mario Galaxy 1, or the thought that Mario Galaxy 2 will “kill” Galaxy 1.

Either way, I pronounce this one to be failure. But on the plus side, you did come up with some interesting stuff for Yoshi to do for each of the commands (the “lay” one was a knee-slapper, but good).

3. Teengamer says:

Ray we already KNOW how disappointed you were to not find Yoshi in Mario Galaxy! Ugh, this is a recycled joke to me. Sorry.

I prefer the guest strip you guys did, which was quite entertaining.

• D3vin says:

Besides, he is going to be in the sequel. Nintendo has offered you a peace offering and you just have to keep reopening those wounds and pouring salt into them!
*sigh*

• Myuu says:

I agree with you, Ray’s BitF guest strip is better than this, which is the least funny I’ve found a 2PStart strip in a while.

4. Rydash says:

See, I appreciated the art style of the comic. But apparently it’s just me…?

5. lilman1101 says:

yay (first comment ever) anyway guys i thought it was funny, cut him some slack =)

6. BooCwis says:

I NOW OFFICIALLY DEEM THIS MOVIE BETTER THAN UP!

But in all seriousness (sorry time, I liked Up)…Yoshi wasn’t really dead in Galaxy, he just wasn’t there. Unless you two are referring to the wooden Yoshi head. Maybe you guys mean that the TREES used to make that galaxy are dead? But then that wouldn’t be Yoshi…or would it?
Actually now that I think of it, maybe Yoshi had a space sickness and this movie was created to show how Mario trains Yoshi to get over that for the 2nd game.

And in the guest strip, loved the last strip, but did you draw that tennis court in the first panel or put in a photo realistic background? Did you really stoop to that level, Ray?

• MiMGodfather says:

They’re not actually inferring that Yoshi is dead, just “playing dead”…for the entirety of the Mario Galaxy (1) game. He held it for quite a while, so I think Yoshi deserves a nice big treat (or a few hundred thousand) in Galaxy 2.

7. TriforceGhost says:

That was humorous in an “Awww, poor Yoshi” kinda way. One of those ‘its-painful-to-think-about-but-I-can’t-help-but-laugh’ things. Yeah, the joke’s a little old, but I love the take on the art this week, so that more than makes up for it.

Also, with the teaser pic on the main site page, I so want to make Yoshi Easter Eggs now. You have no idea.

8. steve-ohs says:

Yeah, I consider the disapointment of Yoshi not being in Galaxy similiar to the old comic.
But considering Yoshi is my favorite character, and this is the first 2Pstart comic to actually have Yoshi in it, I can overlook it and say:
This comic is AWESOME!! Because it has Yoshi and Yoshi makes everything AWESOME x 10!
NCG!!

9. KnucklesE says:

Gosh… I liked it this comic. Don’t listen to the negativity. It was very well done and it had a maybe, sarcastic punchline? All together I really enjoyed it.

10. JohnW says:

NCG! Why does no one like this?

11. MiMGodfather says:

To those claiming that this comic is not topical or a recycled joke…

1) The comic *is* topical because of the movie “How To Train Your Dragon” which comes out tomorrow.

2) Since when does recycling a joke make it bad? I mean, Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver were just released, and I find them equally as hilarious as the originals.

NCG 🙂 Just so we’re clear, I don’t find this to be recycling a joke at all. A similar joke maybe, though handled in a completely different manner. Though this comic did make me think about Mario 64, where after hours of star collecting to get to the top of the castle and find Yoshi, what happens? Nothing. He talks to you for a second. Whee. lol

12. MAD_BOY says:

Well, I guess it’s finally time to rise from my grave. Been reading the comic ever since number 5 and been listening to the podcast since number 50 or so. I know, shame on me for lurking in the shadows for such a long time.

I really like the different style of this one a lot. The joke itself was ok. It made me chuckle a bit.
Looking forward to next week.

13. Apkinesis says:

Not the greatest, but still quite good. The art style seemed fitting, and the “Stay” panel was my favorite. However, it feels like more could’ve been done with the first panel, such as attaching a little sparkle to each of certain letters to spell out a secret hidden message — a la the “UR MR GAY” of Galaxy 1 and the backwards “YA I M, R U” of Galaxy 2. (I’d look for an example in this comic’s first panel myself, but class is about to start at the moment; perhaps later.)

• Apkinesis says:

Hm, the best I could come up with was this. I guess it’s some kind of hidden encouragement for when Ray sees a pretty girl waiting in line to watch “How to Train Your Dragon” and is hesitant to ask her out when he becomes overly self-critical and questions if she’d find him attractive enough 😛

14. Zsy says:

I think it’s time to… rise from my grave!

I just want to say, I’ve been reading this comic since the very first one.
(I know, how dare me…)
I’ve always loved gaming webcomics and am always avidly searching for new ones, which is how I managed to find this comic so early in its life. I used to vote for you guys weekly in the Joystiq webcomic wrapup until Joystiq began moving away from Nintendo news. I didn’t begin listening to the podcast until just recently (Most gaming webcomics tend to suck) and I was really surprised by the overall quality. It really makes my day at work go by a lot faster, even though my coworkers often wonder what I’m laughing at…

Keep up the good work, and don’t drown!

• TheKickAwesome says:

I’m looking forward to the severe roasting you will be receiving on the podcast.. 😀

• mkava says:

Even if this is your grave rising, and you’ve been around for as long as I have… welcome. =) I hope Tim and Ray don’t burn you too bad so you keep commenting.

I listen to the podcast at work as well. I do tend to wait until Wednesdays though, as I am slowing down at that point in the week.

15. roadjcat says:

Nitpicky time! I thought Yoshi was a dinosaur…but other than that SCG.

16. Jarkes says:

Eh… This comic was… all right. I… didn’t quite get it though.

17. letsplaynothing says:

hey guys, rising from my grave. i have been reading the comic for 3-4 months, but i have read the archives. i just recently started listening to the podcasts with number 16, but have grown addicted. ncg lol apc(awesome podcast) lpn graverisen and out

18. abcd says:

shouldn’t it have been fetch then lay

19. Snifit says:

It seems this comic is getting far too over-analyzed.
It was a nicely drawn set of jokes with a bigger punch line at the end.
It was artistic, small, and easy to chuckle to. Not the absolute funniest but far from the worst.
Made me laugh and that’s what a comic should do.
Snifit says: Success

20. Highwater Trousers says:

Initial impression: Wait, Yoshi’s a dragon? Second impression: Okay, where is this going. Third impression: Ha, that’s kind of funny. Final impression: Better keep this comic away from Mario Galaxy fanboys…

I have to be honest, I got a slight chuckle, but nothing that actually made me laugh like I usually do. While I can’t quite put my finger on it, it just feels as if this comic is not as creative as your other ones. Maybe it’s because the comic falls upon negative sarcasm instead of general wit and a clever pun, I don’t know. However, this is by far, not a bad comic. In fact, I can think of some people I can show this to. Good comic guys, but definitely not my favorite.

21. Curaga says:

Brilliant idea to make a comic relating to that movie and yoshi, I think the punchline could have used work, perhaps making the last panel mario jumping off of yoshi for an extra jump smw style? It was still a nice read though, and I love the simple style of this, it reminds me of the Blueprint of Success comic in terms of style and execution, and thats a very good thing.

22. Darkspines22 says:

Hey guys! loved your Brawl in the Family guest strip (I showed it to some people on an email and one went “I dont get it… 😛 and another went huh… my friends don’t play video games as much as me), and I love this strip.

Here’s an idea for a 2p Start version of “I’ve Gotta Feeling”:
I’ve gotta feeling (ooo-ooooh)
that the next 2p start comic will be great
I can’t wait to see what Tim and Ray make
And God dangit I freaking love Tims take.

23. mrpineapplehead says:

hah i kind of get it….ANYWAY still very funny

24. letsplaynothing says:

check out sonic and pals

25. Sebby19 says:

I don’t like the last two panels. You’ve done this joke before for the last panel, and the 2nd last, I don’t get. Mario Party?

26. SuperSmeagol says:

It’s a comic guys. You are blowing it so out of proportion. Just enjoy it for what it is. You don’t have to take every word literally. He was not saying Yoshi was dead in SMG. The fact that he didn’t appear in the game at all was why he said “PLAY dead”.

27. Dry Bones says:

Great artwork on this one. Solid joke, too.

I feel like I say this every time I comment. Have I become too much of a 2P Start fanboy?

28. D3vin says:

It was good for a chortle, but not much else. Since I’m not much of a Yoshi fan, It must have been that. I did like the art style, though. I feel it would have been better without the misleading first panel. You could have just replaced it with a more generic “Train your Yoshi/Dragon/Dinosaur/whatevertheheckeheis for Dummies/idiots/morons/knubbyelbowedskislopedhairedguys
I guess nothing could top that epic Tim’s Take from last week 😀

29. Oliby says:

According to Brawl, Yoshi’s Final Smash is Super Dragon, so having Yoshi as a dragon certainly fit, though there’s no real answer on what Yoshi is. It’s my opinion that most people think Yoshi is a dinosaur because his first appearance was on Dinosaur Island in Super Mario World. More likely, Dinosaur Island was named so not because of Yoshi, but because of the Rex that lived on the island.

Furthermore, having Yoshi as a dragon will surely make Dragonblader1 happy.

Nice comic guys; I enjoyed it.

• Apkinesis says:

Yoshi is a dino.
I mean, he’s a dragon-dino.
Or… maybe he’s just a dragon…
But he is still YOSHI~!!
YOSHI~!!
Burninating with Red Shell breath,
Burninating the island,
Burninating all the Brawlers —
When he does his FINAL SMAAAASH~!!
DOES THAT FINAL SMAAASH~!!
And now Yoshi flies through the STAAAARS~!!
30. Batty1580 says:

Wow. Harsh comments. Personally, I loved it. NCG

31. TheKickAwesome says:

This comic used to be good, back last week when Tim drew it.

I guffaw’d at the last panel.

• TheKickAwesome says:

listening to the podcast at the moment (which means I’ll probably post again in about 30 minutes) and I would like to say that my comment was meant to be a joke (I can get defensive, right?)

I really liked the comic and the artwork and idea were fantastic 🙂

32. Tadawan says:

Good artwork, OK joke. Nothing amazing, I’m thinking possible failure…

33. CKcheeseboy says:

I can’t be the only one who was thinking “Make Eggs, Throw Eggs” the whole time I was reading this.

34. The Gastronomic Gamer says:

I thought that the build-up was great, but the punchline fell flat.

Sorry, but I’m gonna have to deem this comic: failure.

35. Retl says:

It’s probably because I haven’t seen or read anything about the movie How to Train Your Dragon that I miss what the sum of the whole may be as an lead-up style joke.
*Puts on Yoshi hat.*
But I did totally fanboy all over this comic. “Because it has Yoshi and Yoshi makes everything AWESOME x 10!” in Steve-ohs’s words.
The tiny jabs in each panel did make me smile. The stars from the Ground Pound / Yoshi Bomb SSB style makes that yellow Sit panel wonderful for me (I’m probably going to scale it up then plaster the result all over my netbook’s background wallpaper shortly), while Lay, Fetch, and Roll Over had a delayed effect where I was like:
Wait, what’s the joke. I don’t get it wha– OH! Dogs don’t do it that way!
And then I was like:
THIS IS CUTE RIGHT CLICK SAVED.

So yeah, keep up the good work, guys. It’s been fun. Thanks for the comics!

36. JackitK says:

First impression was “huh, Yoshi is a dragon?” I only just now realized you were referencing a movie that’s coming out soon… First I’ve heard of it then again I’ve never been much of a movie person. >_<

0 die for "stay" was a clever idea I would say. 🙂

• mkava says:

That was my favorite part. Didn’t get it at first, but once I did, got a good smirk going. I enjoy clever jokes. =D

37. JSG says:

OOOOOHHH I GET IT NOW!

Its a good thing the word “2” exists.

38. Bobipine says:

An o.k. comic this week, still enjoying that blueprint/textured drawings. The final joke probably just didn’t click as intended here. The other jokes, intended or not, remembered me of the Super Mario World’s yoshis, green is the regular, red spit fire balls, yellow cause tremors, pink is random I think, and blue usually fly, but I don’t see how that could have been reverent to dog trick.

39. Grade A Classic 2PSTART!

Pun – scroll – pun – scroll – pun – scroll – surprise! punchline.

On a scale from 1 to 10 I give it a “SUCCESS!”

(also, on a random note, first time in awhile I noticed the logo before the comic; I’m getting better!)

40. SuperVegeta says:

The art style was interesting, the jokes were cute, but the ending let me down. I also never really thought of Yoshi as a dragon, but I can look past that. The roll over was the best in my opinion. It got a mild chuckle out of me.

41. mkava says:

The art style was neat (simplistic presentation but does a great job of illustrating the humor), but the joke. Uh, does any part of the movie involve space? >.> Just a tad confused about the punchline, other than it poking fun at no Yoshi in SMG1. *shrug*

Sweet logo though. =)

42. D3vin says:

Let me guess, Yoshi is also only available in five levels and you can’t take him to the next. I think Mario needs a REAL Dragon as an ally. Or at least have Wario dress up as one, like he has on several occasions.

• Talduras says:

This is Mario Bros. we’re talking about here. It’d probably look similar to Dragonite from the Pokemon games, but have more cuteness than Flammie from the Mana series.

Actually… that’s not a bad idea…

• D3vin says:

Dragons have appeared before in the Marioverse, like in Yoshi’s Story and in Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door as both allies or enemnies. And besides, Mario having a Dragon that could take Bowser on would be cool, since it would be more of those Japanese “Giant Monster” movies (like Godzilla!)

• talduras says:

Knowing the Mario franchise, any meeting between a Mario-allied dragon and Bowser (particularly in the RPG branch you just listed an example of) could only end in a pile of severe tongue-in-cheek humor. Not necessarily a bad thing, but that usually entails less fighting, a weird twist, and more dialogue… really, really hilarious dialogue!

Man, suddenly I’ve got the craving for another Mario RPG…

43. freeplay says:

was this surpost to be the long awaited worst comic ever, cause it was awful.

• freeplay says:

to be the worst comic ever, they have to try. o brother would be a shortcut. just like how the tim’s takes are horrible, but it requires no effort to make a bad tim’s take

p.s.
the first tim’s take was better than this comic.

44. yeah568 says:

I don’t get it.

Is the death of 2P STA –

Kidding. 😀

But seriously, how dare I. >.<

45. steve-ohs says:

The more I see the comic, the more I like it, and I liked it the first time i saw it. But the first time I was kinda rushing through it to see the end joke, and I missed how clever the other commands are. The stay idea I thought was really creative. and kinda sad, poor yoshi, he’s never going to able to get to that star.

46. Mageleif says:

Why is this getting so much hate? Are all you people that dislike the comic Yoshi bashers? And as for the “Is Yoshi a dragon?” debate, well his final smash in Brawl is called “Super Dragon” so there room for some belief. Perhaps Yoshis are half dino and half dragon.

• D3vin says:

Not really, but since I was raised on the belief that Yoshi was a dinosaur, I still side with that side of the arguement. I just think the first panel is misleading and would have been better with something else. They still could have called the comic “How to trade your ‘dragon’ “, it just would have been better if it was slightly differently.

• BooCwis says:

Well, according to the Super Mario Wiki…
http://www.mariowiki.com/Yoshi_(species)
Yoshi’s a dinosaur.

But honestly, It’s MARIO, where mushroom make you grow bigger, where you jump higher than your body, where you use that jump to stomp turtles, where hills have eyes, where paper doesn’t dissolve in water, where an Italian can breath in space (and underwater), where you can die multiple times, where you can play tennis, baseball, kart race, and party with your arch nemesis, where you can fly with a cape, where if you can die if you don’t wear your hat, where plants have teeth, where if your small enough you can walk on water, where Bowser can be in his own stomach, where a black hole is visible and doesn’t inhale a planet right next to it, where Bowser has a voice actor, where you die if a mushroom monster…thing touches you, where it’s okay to kill minions, where background music plays ALL THE TIME (it’s okay in TTYD), where floating blocks are EVERYWHERE, where your world consists of just levels, where a flower can give you fire, where you never have to go to the bathroom, where you can jump into a wall and not get a broken nose, where a ghost with no legs can where ice skates, where someone can be as ugly as Waluigi and as fat as Wario, where a vacuum cleaner inhales ghosts, where you can jump through paintings, where stars don’t burn through your hand where a princess gets captured ALL THE TIME, where having a good mustache gives you discounts, where wearing different clothes give you different powers, where money is scattered everywhere, where you ride a dinosaur dragon…thing…

My point is, does it REALLY matter what the heck Yoshi is with a galaxy’s worth of paradoxes? Heck, I want to know what WALUIGI is!

47. MorbidGreymon says:

Epic comic guys. This is my first comment, and I’ve read every comic a couple times and am about half way through the podcasts. Also, I have to ask an interesting question: What are you guys going to do when Sonic Team makes a character worse than Black Doom?

48. D3vin says:

Another thing, is the different colors of each one a reference on how Yoshi changes colors in Galaxy 2? Or is the off screen announcer training several of them at once.

49. Sir Bladington XIII says:

This brings up the horrible, life-scarring memories of you giving SMG a 9.3. How could you have your own opinion AND give it a near perfect score? That game deserved a PERFECT 10. That review ruined every part of my life ever. D;

Oh yes, an NCG. Pretty clever joke there. I also like the stay panel. Yoshi’s sad gesture is hilarious.

50. Megafan says:

I suppose it is time for me to Rise From My Grave.
I’ve been a fan of 2pstart for, Get ready to gasp, comic 55.
I’ve been listening to your podcasts only recently. I think after the Cloudy with a chance of PS3 edition.
Due to overwhelming guilt, I’ve risen from my grave.
BTW, Next grave riser should put rise from your grave as many times as physically possible.
So long, and keep it up.

51. zeldadude says:

AH CRAP. that other comment I posted (in response to booCwis) ended the post I was originally going to post. CRAP. anyways, ECG, four stars, and can we get a panel in wallpaper form?

52. Laelaps says:

NCG!

Ray: Great artwork.
Tim: People have been giving you a lot of flak for the timing with repect to SMG, but, honestly, would it have made ANY sense if you had created this comic back then? I mean, the whole “How to Train Your Dragon” thing, first, DOES make it current, and second, makes it so that this comic could only have come out at the same time as the movie; otherwise it would have been this random theme that people would have been criticizing even more.

• freeplay says:

1st the artwork is just plain lazy
2nd ‘how to train your dragon’ isn’t video game related, so it’s not current.
bottom line, worst comic yet. I hope it’s back to the normal quality next week.

• All your opinion are belong to you

• freeplay says:

sorry if i seem harsh, i just feel that this comic emotionally scared me for life.

• MiMGodfather says:

Just because the style is different doesn’t mean that it’s worse than the usual style. Maybe Ray is experimenting with different styles, or maybe he’s just trying to mix things up a bit. In what way is this the “worst comic yet” as you put it, or even a horrible comic altogether? You’ve stated your opinion on the comic, but have put nothing remotely factual to support that opinion. Maybe I’m just a bit annoyed, or slightly intoxicated (or both), but I really don’t understand exactly WHY you consider this to be the worst comic ever. Please explain.

• MiMGodfather says:

I’d like to apologize to Ray, Tim, and everyone else for the childish tone of my previous message. I was not in the proper state of mind at the time, and I hope you all can forgive me for that.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I don’t want to risk driving anyone away with my fanboy-ish drama.

• Kvb says:

I really can’t call the artwork lazy, Freeplay.
For one, Ray put in the same amount of effort he puts in every week. He just had to spread it over two comics this time around.
Also, I think the plain 2P Start style is better spent on comics that tell a story, where each panel indicates only a small progression in time. Not so much the gag-a-panel comics, where the leap in time between each panel is unknown, or each panel showcases a different scenario entirely. Those work much better when they’re stylized, in my opinion.

53. I have to say, genuinely awesome comic guys. With all these negative comments I feel obligated to comment again just to give it praise. I mean, for crying out loud, give credit where credit is due! On the comic itself, the artwork is great. I really like the textured feel of the panels and the silhouette Yoshi’s giving it the feel of an instructional guide. The colors of the panels also seem to coincide with that of the starbits from SMG. A hidden detail of sorts, perhaps? And lastly:

A – On Dragon vs. Dinosaur: Did you get the joke? Then get over it! Also, the Chinese word for dinosaur means terrible dragon. WOW! AMazing! It’s almost as if they’re… similar.

B – On ‘Recycled’ jokes: Really? You telling me you never tell a good story to a new friend just because someone who’s already heard it is sitting in the room too? Must have awfully quiet parties…

C – How to Train a Dragon IS a frelling video game as well, imagine that! Not that it matters. The Wall-E comic was also awesome and was film inspired.

54. boxless says:

wow, i would really love to see these (with and without speech bubble) as wall papers for my desktop! and i tell you now i’m pretty pretentious about he quality of gaming art that sits upon my desktop.

55. Scawt says:

You guys are ridiculous. This is an excellent comic. It’s a creative reference to a recent movie, and the puns with the tricks were great. I don’t know why you’re freaking out about the last panel, who cares if the game came out a while ago? Stop over-analyzing everything and try to enjoy the comic for once.

56. Poppa Rocks says:

I haven’t posted a comment in a while, so why not now? Heh. Anyway, not a bad comic this week! A simple joke is sometimes just the right joke, as this comic clearly shows. The last panel really does drive a point home. Good job guys!

57. Gadoink says:

This comic USED to be good…

58. bionichute says:

now i think is a good time to… rise from my grave.
i found you guys by searching for something (i don’t remember what) and i found your wall-e comic, i laughed and continued. i then wondered what the site the comic was on was called, and began my search. when i found the site i read through the archives and i now check it every week for new podcasts and comics.
2p start is my second favourite comic (first being brawl in the family) now.

59. SgtBlink says:

Haha, I don’t care what anyone else says this was absolutely hilarious! Maybe the fact I saw the movie today helped a little, but still I loved it!

P.S. Been reading the archives a while and this is my first comment, now I’m going to have to listen to your podcast again and see if I got on Rise From Your Grave (or Death, I can’t quite remember…). Keep it up!

P.P.S. Yoshi was a man!…No he was a dragon-man!….No, he was just a dragon! But he was still Yooooshi! Hehe.

60. Rob G says:

Wow, way too much hating here! Was a solid comic, and I loved the different art style (as a change of pace, not as a dislike of your old one)

61. koollizard says:

everyone everyone…..just calm down take a deep breth we know yoshi will be in smg2……but the fact is he isnt in smg1……thats the joke ok calm down..inhale….exhale….inhale…..exhale. now im goning to go to bed because im so tired im seeing god of war’s aries in my brothers toy transformer……will all you yoshi fanboys be ok without me?

62. Dangerdan says:

Ummmm i dont want to go through every comment in here but has anyone pointed out that yoshi is a dinosaur and not a dragon?

63. Teddy says:

Now I’m sure it’s a Dreamcast movie.

64. Jumbif says:

Is this saying Super Mario Galaxy is dead because of Yoshi being in SMG2?

65. bcow1020 says:

Wow, that Tim’s take was absulutely EPIC.

66. D3vin says:

Now that it has changed to the ending you STOLE FROM OTHER PEOPLE! I like it better, although I must admit that it fits better.

67. mrpineapplehead says:

YOU CHANGED THE LAST PANNEL? HOW DARE YOU!….ha ha just kidding glad you did that with people taking the comic too far and now i get all of the comic now

• mrpineapplehead says:

p.s. i was thinking it was a kirby comic at first because i was thinking it said dragoon..i have no idea why

68. Kvb says:

Whaaaaat? You changed it? I never would’ve thought the person who insisted on keeping Ryu’s sixth finger would want to go through with something like that.
I prefer this one, but I’m glad the original joke is still available. It’s such a drastically different joke, that you can’t guarantee this is a better joke for everyone.

69. Retl says:

Kvb nailed my sentiments with the change, exactly.

Though, while I can say it won’t be a better joke for everyone, it will be a lot easier to grasp for users more familiar with the older games and those who haven’t really been playing new games since the SNES.

What I mean is. Much easier to grasp sense of closure. Not necessarily a fun one. But the original is still there.

70. freeplay says:

well now that the last panel is changed, the comic is awesome.

• CKcheeseboy says:

So let me get this straight…your initial complaints were “lazy” artwork and the fact that “How to Train Your Dragon” isn’t video game related…yet after they change something completely unrelated to those two things, you’ve all of a sudden changed your opinion?
Although I have to say I think I like Curaga’s Mario a bit more than Ray’s.

71. Mariothezook says:

WTF!?!? The punchline was so much better in the Galaxy version!

72. Apkinesis says:

With the updated final panel, I’ll update my comment:

Nice comic guys! The art style seemed fitting, and the “Stay” and “Play Dead” panels were my favorite. However, it feels like more could’ve been done with the first panel, though I’m not sure what — maybe some sparkles spelling out a hidden message (a la Mario Galaxy), though that might seem out of place as this comic has nothing to do with Galaxy.

73. C.Olimar788 says:

Duuuude the comic changed. Like magic!

I definitely like the last panel better, and it works better for the subject, I think. The old one was good, too, though, and I actually found funnier. It’s good that you kept the original in the comments!

74. Zacko says:

I honestly liked the original better. The masses can suck it.

75. SuperVegeta says:

This new last panel is much funnier. I don’t know if it’s because Tim’s Take got us laughing at the thought of Mario intentionally killing Yoshi, but either way, this is a much better punchline.

76. Burns says:

As Zacko said, let the masses suck it. The original was fun, but this one isn’t bad either. Both are nice

77. Snifit says:

The new panel is a little easier to understand, but I still prefer the first one.
Still makes me smile though.

78. TomX says:

Ye gads. I should really comment more often. Well, just to throw my hat in the ring for this one… I did enjoy the original version, but that being said, I think the edit version has a much stronger joke. Keep up the good work guys!

79. Koopabros64 says:

Rising from my grave here I have been following you guys since the brawl in the family guest podcast. I have gotten a few good laughs out of your comics, and despite all the hatred on your newest one I think it was better the old way. Now it’s more like how to kill your yoshi, and dosn’t really fit the theme.

80. NintendoNaut says:

Sorry guys. Does it make sense? Yeah. Is it funny? No.

81. ? says:

You know, with the feature Yoshi got in “New super Mario bros. Wii” was only like about 7 or so levels in the whole game. Not really a good comback. I have a feeling they will do that for super mario Glaxy 2

82. ticorico says:

its just a comic and it is rather funny, dont get me wrong I love the mario seris and my fav charactor is yoshi, but thats what happens in the game alot of times

83. ticorico says:

its just a comic and it is rather funny, dont get me wrong I love the mario seris and my fav charactor is yoshi, but thats what happens in the game alot of times

84. Ejigantor says:

Ok, I haven’t read through ALL the comments, and maybe I’m not qualified to comment seeing as I’ve not played Super Mario Galaxy (still don’t have a WII, maybe when I get my tax return) but I assumed the final panel was a reference to Yoshi’s first appearance, Super Mario World (SNES) and the practice of leaping from Yoshi’s back to save yourself from a pit when you missed the jump

• Ejigantor says:

hokay, nevermind; I missed the link to the original version of the comic (what I get for missing a week and looking later)

85. PJRandall says:

I just figured the comic was about Yoshi-Jumping to save your hide, like when you misjudge a jump in SMW, or the ones that are required in oh-so-many SMW hacks.

86. PJRandall says:

Whoops, didn’t see Ejigantor’s post. 😛

87. shyguy22 says:

Tim, Ray, how do you make a website like this… its AWESOME!

88. Nomoreblue says:

Why do people think this has anything to do with Mario Galaxy? It’s one of the moves Mario uses in the games, the “Kick Yoshi to his death for an added boost” move! I’m pretty sure that was the joke, and as it rests in my head, it was a pretty funny joke!

Great comic guys =)

89. Mirby says:

YOU TRAITOROUS SWINE!

Hehehe, this is friggin awesome!

90. BooCwis says:

Late for the whole Yoshi dragon argument, but coming from SMG2’s official website:
“Plus this time Mario gets to team up with his dinosaur buddy Yoshi”
Yoshi’s a dinosaur. END OF STORY (Yoshi’s Story, that is…)

91. BadnikHunter says:

Woah, you guys changed a panel! Isn’t that 2P Start blasphemy for Ray?
