Absence Makes the Wait Feel Longer

RayWait, Sonic has to have writers…right? I mean, where do you think those awesome lyrics to his music come from?

This comic was a lot of fun for me to make. It may have had something to do with mixing my love for Sonic with my love for Smash… Sonic and Sakurai: the comedy duo of the year…

Check out the vectors used in panel 3 (click the image for a larger version):

Vectors for Smash Bros. Stage

TimI realize that we’ve done a few Sonic comics and a few Smash Bros. comics, but since Ray is such a freak about both topics it should be understandable. Also, this is the week everyone was supposed to be playing the game, and let’s be honest, the blog updates on the official Smash Bros. site haven’t exactly helped matters. We were all expecting a great update on Monday as a consolation for NOT having the game in our hands, but instead they give us miserable Friend Codes! Talk about throwing salt in your wounds! So hopefully this comic puts a smile on your face. (P.S. – Happy birthday mom!)

Frame 3 looks awesome. I wonder if there’s anyone who won’t get it.

  2. Tristan says:

wow. thats cool. btw, that glowing orb under the stage looks like its from the melee stage “battlefield”. was that an accident (like you thought it was in that stage, but it wasnt), or intentional (like an inside joke or something)? or did just put it in because it looked cool?

  3. Tristan says:

oh btw, the new news on the brawl site, says that if a player on standby (holding a smash ball) takes damage, they can FUMBLE the smash ball and drop it, meaning another player could take it. interesting! much more so than freind codes! XD

I tried to stay as true as possible to Brawl (right down to the text itself), and the orb underneath is actually present in the Brawl version of Battlefield.

Yes…. except we had already known nearly all of those things from experiencing it first-hand at E For All, but that doesn’t mean I’m allowed to complain. So I won’t.

  5. Narnian says:

Funny comic. It still hurts to see anything Brawl related, though. It’s like trying to clean a paper cut by pouring lemon juice on it. Yowch.

  6. David says:

LOL. That was great! I added this on StumbleUpon.

    Great comic.

Keep up the fantastic work, guys!

    Lol, that was sorely needed.

Btw, thanks for putting up the vectors. I’m kinda interested in learning how to draw pictures like that and the vectors are pretty helpful in seeing what you did.

The updates are getting ridiculous. Me and a few forum friends had fun making up new ones, here’s my favorite:

“I was thinking of how I could surprise you all, and now I have the perfect idea…”

    “Mario’s Overalls are BLUE!”

    *picture of mario*
    “BLUUUUUUUEEEE!”

“If I had to call it something, it would be… blue”

“I hope people don’t want mauve overalls, I’m not sure if I can do that…”

“also, I have this new song of me singing how much I hate the Earthbound series. You can almost hear the Americans crying in the background! It’s so… powerful.”

“If I had to call it something, it would be… HA HA NO MOTHER 3 FOR YOU!”

  9. VFDroid says:

Heh. That was great. I’m not sure I understand the comment about Paper Mario, however…

I added it towards the last moment to set up the last panel’s text balloons. The idea is that the Paper Mario series is full of so much reading, that their entire staff is only writers.

    • Cheeseball701 says:

Oh really? I thought it was a comment on the lack of Paper Mario (or anything from the Mario RPGs, save a few trophies and stickers) in Smash Bros.. (that’s not a typo) Having Paper Mario would be analogous to Toon Link, or Dr. Mario for that matter… (that was an ellipsis) except Paper Mario would have a hammer, and he can fold himself up into paper airplanes because paper airplanes are freakin’ awesome. (it would work like Metaknight”s gliding ability) And I want a Goombella Assist trophy (though that wouldn’t be very useful)

Rambling, you say? Boring? Poorly Written? Cheesy (have you seen my name)? Parenthetical? I write for Sonic.

    Great comic 🙂

Since it seems like you guys are creating a new top graphic for each new comic, I hope you create an archive of them so that we can see them again after the next one comes up.

  12. EL CH33S3 says:

HAHAHA! Great stuff… especially panel three. It looks very cool.

  13. Lava says:

Great Jeaaoorrb! Love Smash, and Sonic is a cool character. Once again, a very lovely comic.

  14. Dj75728 says:

Great comic guys, keep it up!

  15. Anon says:

Writers? Since when did Sonic have writers? LOL

  16. Troy says:

I have a love/hate relationship with Sonic games. I try to love them all, but hate admitting that. Great comic though, keep up the good work.

  17. hyper dude says:

    when did sonic failed?

  18. Andrew says:

This a great comic guys. The art is particularly good this week, kudos Ray. I really love the papers and Masahiro’s hair flying about as Sonic whooshes towards him on panel 8. The nice, blue speed effect coming off Sonic is great too.

  19. A Visitor says:

This comic is alright, but come on, you’re still riding the Sonic bashing/mocking train and thinking it’s funny? Strangely enough, in this comic you’re saying that Sonic has no writers while in a previous comic you complained about the abundance of text in Sonic Rush Adventure, which was obviously written by a writer, don’t you think? Maybe not a particularly gifted writer, but when I look at the nonsense that many of those TV writers on strike use to churn out, or at other games (Super Mario Galaxy had such an elaborate story, didn’t it?), then it doesn’t seem so bad at all.
    Cheers.

  20. MKava says:

Heh, nice comic. Much like how the Mario titles (main series only) have so very little story, Sonic was rarely different. But how much story do you need to know that Dr. Eggman is bad? He’s a fat man turning little animals into robots for his evil bidding.. and you, Sonic, must stop him. Same rough amount of story as the Mario games, still fun to play both. Story isn’t important at times, so writers aren’t too terribly needed at times.

…I forgot what I was going to say before I started to ramble.
So.. um… nice comic. I’m jealous of the art even though I’m a more traditional artist instead of using digital means (I am experienced with both though). Nice artwork and nice joke about the Paper Mario staff.
